تشهد ولاية نيوجيرسي الأمريكية تصاعداً في الاحتجاجات أمام مركز احتجاز المهاجرين «ديلاني هول» بمدينة نيوارك، في أحدث موجة اعتراض على سياسات الرئيس دونالد ترمب المتعلقة بالهجرة غير الشرعية.

وأسفرت المواجهات بين المتظاهرين وقوات إنفاذ القانون الفيدرالية عن اعتقال أكثر من 80 شخصاً منذ أواخر مايو الماضي.

ويتظاهر المئات تضامناً مع المحتجزين داخل المركز، الذي تديره شركة GEO Group الخاصة والمتعاقدة مع الحكومة الأمريكية، احتجاجاً على سوء الأوضاع المعيشية.

ووفقاً لمنظمة «كوسيتشا» المدافعة عن حقوق المهاجرين، بدأ عدد من المحتجزين إضراباً عن الطعام، كما وجهوا رسائل مكتوبة طالبوا فيها بتحسين ظروف الإقامة وتوفير الرعاية الطبية والأدوية اللازمة.

واتهم المحتجزون إدارة المركز بتقديم طعام فاسد أو منتهي الصلاحية، إضافة إلى الاكتظاظ ونقص التكييف. كما أكد أعضاء ديمقراطيون في الكونجرس زاروا المنشأة أن روايات المحتجزين تستحق التحقيق.

من جانبها، نفت إدارة ترمب وجود أي إضراب عن الطعام أو إساءة معاملة، مؤكدة أن المحتجزين يحصلون على حاجاتهم الأساسية. كما دافعت شركة GEO عن إدارة المركز، معتبرة الانتقادات جزءاً من حملة سياسية تستهدف مراكز احتجاز المهاجرين.

وشهدت الاحتجاجات مواجهات متكررة، إذ استخدم بعض المتظاهرين حواجز وصناديق قمامة لإعاقة حركة المركبات، بينما لجأت الشرطة إلى الغاز المسيل للدموع والهراوات لتفريق الحشود. وأعلنت السلطات توقيف عدد من الأشخاص بتهم الاعتداء على عناصر الأمن والتخريب، فيما أصيب عدد من ضباط إنفاذ القانون خلال الأحداث.

وتعرضت صحفيتان للإصابة أثناء تغطيتهما الاحتجاجات، ووجهت السلطات اتهامات لأحد مسؤولي إنفاذ القانون بسرقة معدات تصوير تعود لمصورة تابعة لوكالة «أسوشيتد برس».

ومع تصاعد التوتر، وصفت حاكمة الولاية ميكي شيريل الوضع بأنه «غير آمن وغير مقبول»، واستدعت شرطة الولاية للمساعدة في ضبط الأمن. كما فرض عمدة نيوارك راس باراكا حظر تجول ليلياً قبل أن يخفف الإجراءات لاحقاً مع تراجع أعداد الاعتقالات.

وفي تطور جديد، رفع المدعي العام لولاية نيوجيرسي دعوى قضائية ضد شركة GEO، متهماً إدارة المركز بمنع مفتشي الصحة الحكوميين من الوصول الكامل للتحقيق في الشكاوى المتعلقة بظروف الاحتجاز.

The state of New Jersey is witnessing a rise in protests outside the "Delaney Hall" immigrant detention center in Newark, in the latest wave of opposition to President Donald Trump's policies regarding illegal immigration.

Clashes between protesters and federal law enforcement have resulted in the arrest of more than 80 individuals since late May.

Hundreds are demonstrating in solidarity with those detained inside the center, which is run by the private company GEO Group under contract with the U.S. government, protesting against poor living conditions.

According to the organization "Cosecha," which advocates for immigrant rights, several detainees have begun a hunger strike, and they have sent written messages demanding improvements in living conditions and the provision of necessary medical care and medications.

Detainees have accused the management of the center of providing spoiled or expired food, in addition to overcrowding and lack of air conditioning. Democratic members of Congress who visited the facility confirmed that the detainees' accounts deserve investigation.

For its part, the Trump administration denied the existence of any hunger strike or mistreatment, asserting that detainees receive their basic needs. The GEO Group defended the management of the center, considering the criticisms part of a political campaign targeting immigrant detention centers.

The protests have seen repeated confrontations, as some protesters used barriers and trash cans to obstruct vehicle movement, while police resorted to tear gas and batons to disperse the crowds. Authorities announced the arrest of several individuals on charges of assaulting security personnel and vandalism, while a number of law enforcement officers were injured during the events.

Two journalists were injured while covering the protests, and authorities charged one law enforcement official with stealing camera equipment belonging to a photographer from the Associated Press.

As tensions escalated, Governor of the state, Mikie Sherrill, described the situation as "unsafe and unacceptable," and called in state police to assist in maintaining order. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka imposed a nighttime curfew before later easing the measures as the number of arrests declined.

In a new development, the Attorney General of New Jersey filed a lawsuit against GEO, accusing the management of the center of preventing government health inspectors from having full access to investigate complaints regarding detention conditions.
