في خطوة نزعت فتيل الأزمة مؤقتاً، أعلنت نقابة الأطباء البريطانية تعليق الإضراب الذي كان مقرراً انطلاقه بعد أيام قليلة. وجاء هذا القرار عقب تقديم الحكومة مقترحاً «في اللحظات الأخيرة» يتعلق بالأجور، من المقرر طرحه على أعضاء النقابة للتصويت عليه.
وأوضحت النقابة أن لجنة الأطباء المقيمين ستجري استفتاءً داخلياً لتقييم العرض الحكومي، وهو ما ترتب عليه تجميد الإضراب الذي كان مجدولاً في الـ15 من يونيو الجاري حتى ظهور نتائج التصويت.
ويتضمن المقترح الجديد زيادة في رواتب الأطباء بمتوسط يبلغ 6.6% بحلول أبريل 2027، تضاف إليها التوصيات الصادرة عن هيئة مراجعة الأجور لهذا العام، على أن تتبعها زيادات أخرى لاحقاً.
وفي تعليق له، أكد جاك فليتشر، رئيس اللجنة، أن موقف الأطباء كان واضحاً منذ البداية؛ إذ لا رغبة لديهم في استمرار التصعيد إذا ما توفر عرض حقيقي يستحق النقاش وطرحه على القواعد العمالية. وأشار فليتشر إلى أن الحكم النهائي على العرض سيكون بيد الأطباء أنفسهم، بناءً على مدى قدرته على معالجة أزمتي تآكل الأجور وبطالة الخريجين.
يُذكر أن هذا الإضراب المعلق كان من المفترض أن يمتد من 15 إلى 19 يونيو، وجاء التلويح به سابقاً بعد اتهام النقابة لوزير الصحة، جيمس موري، بالتقاعس عن تحسين عرض الأجور الذي رفضه الأطباء في جولات سابقة.
In a move that temporarily defused the crisis, the British Medical Association announced the suspension of the strike that was scheduled to begin in just a few days. This decision came after the government presented a "last-minute" proposal regarding wages, which is set to be put to the union members for a vote.
The union clarified that the committee of resident doctors will conduct an internal referendum to assess the government offer, which led to the freezing of the strike that was scheduled for June 15 until the voting results are revealed.
The new proposal includes an average salary increase for doctors of 6.6% by April 2027, in addition to the recommendations issued by the pay review body for this year, with further increases to follow later.
In his comments, Jack Fletcher, the committee chair, confirmed that the doctors' position has been clear from the beginning; they do not wish to continue escalation if a genuine offer worthy of discussion and presentation to the labor base is available. Fletcher pointed out that the final judgment on the offer will be in the hands of the doctors themselves, based on its ability to address the crises of wage erosion and graduate unemployment.
It is worth noting that this suspended strike was supposed to last from June 15 to 19, and the threat of it came after the union accused Health Minister James Murray of failing to improve the wage offer that doctors rejected in previous rounds.
