An international team of researchers has uncovered a chemical mechanism that may help cats recognize each other through scent, after discovering a set of unusual fatty acids in urine that form a distinctive composition for each animal.
The researchers identified 13 types of "branched-chain fatty acids," whose compositions and ratios vary from one cat to another, while remaining relatively stable within the same cat, making them akin to a "chemical ID" that cats can distinguish through their sense of smell.
Distinguishing Scents
Behavioral experiments showed that cats can differentiate between the various compositions of these fatty acids. The researchers noted that cats' interest in a urine sample decreases when exposed to the same scent repeatedly, but it rises again when presented with a sample from another cat.
Cats also exhibited what is known as the "Flehmen response," which involves partially opening the mouth while examining certain scents, more prominently when exposed to unfamiliar odors.
Memory Lasting for Months
The study indicated that cats retained a lesser response to scents they had previously recognized even after months had passed, suggesting their ability to maintain long-term memory for certain individual odors.
The researchers found that the specific mixture of fatty acids varies among cats, but remains relatively stable within the same animal, and is resistant to change after leaving the urine mark in the environment.
A Secret Within the Kidneys
The team concluded that these compounds are linked to fat droplets found in the kidney cortex, which are believed to serve as a reservoir that helps maintain the distinctive chemical composition of each cat.
The researchers also found indications of a similar chemical system in other species of the Felidae family, with variations in its composition and complexity among the species.
The results of the study were published in the journal "Current Biology," with contributions from researchers in Japan, Germany, and Spain.
