In psychology and sociology, as well as in the thoughts of thinkers, there are affirmations about the human ability to recognize others, starting with the mother who carried a fetus, nursed a newborn, and protected her child, leading to an attachment to her (in terms of scent, emotion, features, and spirit). Then, the child gradually learns about those around him, including the father and family, coming into life with this skill that he uses to understand others.

Perhaps the classical culture did not contain discussions about the human attempt to recognize itself, which has become clearly prominent in the digital age. The most challenging aspect of this discovery is that a person is the last to see themselves in a complete way. We spend our lives trying to understand the world, while our own selves remain the most elusive thing to comprehend, as if they are the only mirror we cannot stand before from all angles.

How many versions of us live in this world?

These are not the versions we could have become if we had taken a different path, but the versions that others carry in their minds about us. In the memory of everyone we have known, there lives a person who differs slightly from the person we think we are. Here arises a question that does not usually trouble us until we contemplate it sincerely: which of these images is closer to the truth?

We spend our lives believing that we know ourselves better than anyone else. We know what we love, what we fear, what we intend to do, and what we believe in. But it only takes one unexpected situation or a sincere word from a close person for us to feel that there is a side within us that we did not know, or perhaps did not want to know.

If you were to ask ten people to describe a person, it is rare for their descriptions to be similar. Not because a person changes from one to another, but because each person sees them through their own unique experience. We do not see others as they are always, but as our memory, feelings, expectations, and even our old wounds allow us to see them.

But the deeper paradox is that this does not only apply to others; we also do not see ourselves as we truly are. We see an image we have become accustomed to telling ourselves, an image that blends truth with what we hope to be and what we fear to acknowledge.

This may be what makes self-knowledge so arduous. A person does not always fear the truth, but fears that the truth will shatter the image they have lived comfortably with for many years. A mother may think she is fulfilling her role perfectly, only to have one situation reveal that she, like all humans, makes mistakes and overlooks things. Not because her love is less, but because perfection is an image we imagine more than we live.

A friend may think he is the most loyal and honest of friends until a moment comes when he discovers he was silent when he should have spoken, or distanced himself when he was expected to approach, not because his honesty was false, but because a person measures themselves by their intentions, while others measure them by their impact.

Here lies the paradox that we rarely pay attention to: the person who disagrees with us, or even the one who does not like us, may have seen a side of us that we have failed to see. Not because they know us better, but because they stand in a different corner. This does not make their judgment a complete truth, but it also makes ignoring them a mistake, for truth does not reside in a single eye, but is distributed among all eyes.

Perhaps this is why some comments we hear about ourselves hurt us. Not because they reveal what others do not know about us, but because they sometimes reveal what we have been avoiding seeing in ourselves. Some words hurt not because they are false, but because they come closer to the truth than we would like.

There is no single mirror that reflects a person completely. Others see one side, we see another side, and time reveals other aspects that no one had seen. What we call "our truth" is merely a continuous attempt to gather these shards into one image, and perhaps it will never be complete.

Yet, one may wonder: do we really want to see ourselves completely? Some small illusions we hold about ourselves give us the courage to continue on our path, and we may not be able to bear it if our entire truth were revealed to us all at once. Perhaps this is why self-knowledge comes gradually; it is a mercy for us before it is a test.

Therefore, perhaps the wisdom is not to reach a complete understanding of ourselves one day, as that is an illusion that is difficult to achieve. The wisdom lies in remaining ready to review the image we have drawn of ourselves and having the courage to change it whenever life reveals a new face that we had not seen.

And perhaps for this reason, we cannot see ourselves as others see us; because a person is not a single image at all. They are a being that changes with every experience and appears to each eye with a different face. What we think is our truth today may tomorrow be just another reflection we have surpassed.

And perhaps the most beautiful part of the journey is not finding the final answer to the question: who are we? But rather, being able, each time we discover a new aspect of ourselves, to love the truth more than the image we have grown accustomed to.
