I recently finished reading the novel "Yellow Voice" by the novelist Omar Hamdan, which carries a striking human story that begins with love but does not settle there; it gradually expands to touch on fatherhood, absence, betrayal, identity, and the search for roots.
The story begins with a chance meeting between "Mughir," an art journalist from Saudi Arabia, and "Safia," a Swiss artist of Tunisian descent, at a gathering of visual artists in Cairo. However, their relationship does not remain confined to a fleeting love story that began in Egypt and extended to Switzerland; it opens the door to an old family tale that, by the end of the novel, connects to the young "Jala," Safia's daughter, who carries within her the mark of the absent grandfather and her mother's harsh experience with a father she has never seen, after her grandfather abandoned her grandmother upon discovering her pregnancy, leading to the birth of the girl/mother, Safia, as if she were uprooted.
Jala thus lived under the burdens of the legacy of her young husband/father "Faisal Al-Jamal," who is the playful father of her mother Safia, coming from the desert of the Arabian Peninsula. From here, it seems that Jala was not only resisting her mother's new love for the journalist "Mughir" as a romantic relationship but was also resisting the possibility of the past repeating itself, and that the one coming from the "yellow" desert could be an extension of another man who betrayed her grandmother and mother together.
From this perspective, love in the novel becomes confused and charged with doubt; the first love that brought Safia's father "Faisal Al-Jamal" together with her mother left a deep wound, while the second love, between Safia and Mughir, wavers between sincerity and fear of repeating the experience. This makes Jala a troubled character, not rejecting love for its own sake but rather rejecting what it could bring back to her from old pain, and she fiercely resisted it, her resistance making her seem like a disobedient daughter to her mother, until her life ended in a mysterious suicide in the courtyard of her mother's house in "Bern," Switzerland, at a moment of extreme cruelty and dramatic weight.
I believe that the theme of searching for origins is what gives the novel its human dimension. The search here is not only for an absent father but also for a missing part of identity and memory. Therefore, I admired the author's ability to employ imagination in transforming "Mughir," instead of merely being content with his relationship with Safia, into a man searching for his girlfriend's runaway father, in a journey that began in Hail and finally reached him in Riyadh, where he is in intensive care in the hospital, to die "Faisal" before his daughter "Safia" can reach him by a single step. This irony created a poignant dramatic charge; the truth became very close, yet it arrived too late.
From here, I see that the novel touches on love, but it settles more in its human dimension, in the image of the loving "Mughir" who does not content himself with love as a personal desire but goes further in search of a truth concerning the woman he loves. In this behavior, the nobility of the loving Bedouin is manifested, which is one of the beautiful images in the novel that granted Mughir's character its unique presence within the narrative.
Moreover, the presence of art, travel, and the multiplicity of places and cultures added a spaciousness to the story; from Cairo to Bern, and from the desert to Europe, the characters move while carrying their old questions with them, as if the difference in places does not erase the shared human wound.
The novel made me enjoy a human drama that transcends the love story that seems to be the focal point of the narrative. I remained puzzled by the tensions among the three characters; Mughir, Safia, and Jala, until I began to lean towards the idea that the novel did not rely on a single hero, as is the case in many novels, but rather on three heroes, each with their own presence, action, and impact on the course of the story.
Perhaps the title of the novel "Yellow Voice" gains its significance from this world; yellow is not just a color, but it connects to the "yellow" desert from which Mughir's character comes, and to the yellow love that appears in some aspects of the narrative as a confused, anxious love, surrounded by doubt and old memory. It might have been possible for a title like "Yellow Love" to be more direct in linking the color to the theme, but "Yellow Voice" leaves a wider space for interpretation, making the title itself part of the experience rather than just a label for the story.
What I liked about the novel is that Faisal Al-Jamal's family, despite their wealth and status, ultimately acknowledged Safia's paternity and that she became one of the branches of their family tree, at a moment when the character regains part of her right and existence after years of absence and denial. Also, the father's death before seeing his daughter created a poignant dramatic and human dimension for the novel, making the arrival at the truth come too late, as if some absences do not grant life a final chance for compensation.
However, on the other hand, I found that the novel often leans towards explanation and narration, presenting the reader with details about the characters, their pasts, and motivations directly, rather than leaving them the opportunity to discover them through scene, dialogue, and action. This made some parts of it closer to a narrated story than to the narrative experience that the reader lives with the characters.
Therefore, I sometimes felt that the story itself could have been more impactful if the explanatory narrator's presence were reduced, and the space for scene, silence, and implication were expanded, allowing the reader to infer some meanings instead of having them presented complete. The story inherently possesses a great deal of human and dramatic potential and does not always need the narration to explain to the reader what it feels or what it should understand.
Nevertheless, "Yellow Voice" remains an experience worth pausing at; because it does not settle for a love story between a man and a woman from two different places and cultures, but rather makes love an entry point into questions of memory, origin, and family, and into what a delayed truth can do when it appears after many years.
I expected the novel to be rich with more secondary characters that would add to its world, enrich its fabric, and provide the events with more interactions and human intersections, expanding the space of the story and making the main characters more present and impactful.
I finished the novel feeling that Omar Hamdan possesses a story with wide human potential, and that these potentials could shine more if the narration allowed more space for the reader to discover, rather than just know.
A big salute to the writer Omar Hamdan for this experience. And when I learned that it was his first in the world of novel writing, I became more confident that he is capable of presenting us with another work that is more mature and vibrant, benefiting from his first experience and its clear potentials.
I believe that the upcoming novel will be an opportunity for the writer to give the story more space, allowing his characters to speak and reveal themselves, and for the reader to participate in discovering and interpreting them.
