The story of Arabic in Azerbaijan extends from ancient manuscripts that some Azerbaijani homes still preserve, to schools, universities, and language teaching centers; a language that Azerbaijanis have known for centuries, written by their scholars, and whose impact is still present in their language and culture to this day.

Dr. Gular Qafqazli, an Azerbaijani academic specializing in the Arabic language, confirms that the interest in learning Arabic is increasing in her country, coinciding with the expansion of relations with Arab countries and the need for specialists who master it.

Qafqazli has spent years teaching Arabic and has participated in authoring textbooks for its instruction. She spoke to "Okaz" about the presence of the language in Azerbaijani society, the challenges faced by its students, the Saudi role in supporting its education, and what universities and cultural institutions in both countries can do to bring Saudis and Azerbaijanis closer together.

• To begin with.. where does the Arabic language stand today in Azerbaijan?

•• Arabic is taught today in our public and private schools and universities, and interest in it is growing day by day. After there was only one center in Azerbaijan dedicated to teaching Arabic, the number of these centers is continuously increasing.

I believe that Azerbaijan's cooperation with Arab countries has contributed to the increased interest in learning Arabic in various fields.

• From your experience in teaching it.. what are the main challenges faced by Azerbaijani students?

•• One of the main difficulties is the lack of opportunities to communicate with native Arabic speakers. It is true that Arabic has been taught in our public education schools and universities for a long time, but students need greater opportunities to practice the language.

I believe that organizing regular meetings with native Arabic speakers, even once a month, would be very beneficial for the students.

• You have participated in authoring textbooks for the Arabic language.. in your opinion, why does the new generation learn it?

•• Because Arabic is also part of our history. Our ancestors learned the Arabic language with the spread of Islam in Azerbaijan, and they wrote and created in it. Even today, some homes still preserve books from the Middle Ages written in Arabic.

Our goal is for the new generation to be able to understand its past and delve into it, to be able to read and uncover manuscripts written in Arabic, and at the same time, we want to instill a love for this language in the hearts of students.

Moreover, learning Arabic opens up opportunities for young people to work in various fields, including literature, history, translation, and others.

• How does Azerbaijani society view Arabic? Has it remained linked to religion and heritage?

•• There is a growing interest in learning Arabic in Azerbaijani society, and the majority of the population is Muslim, which creates a historical and cultural connection to this language. However, it does not stop there; with the expansion of relations with Arab countries, the demand for specialists who master Arabic is increasing, and it has become important for study, work, and communication.

• What remains of the impact of Arabic in Azerbaijani language and culture?

•• We still use many Arabic words in our mother tongue, and several Azerbaijani scholars in the Middle Ages wrote their works in Arabic.

Today, we return to the works of these scholars, read them, and study them, which reflects the deep presence of Arabic in our cultural and scientific history.

• How do you evaluate the Saudi role in supporting Arabic education in Azerbaijan?

•• I would like to express my gratitude to the King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Center for Arabic Language Services and all its staff. The center continuously organizes high-level Arabic language courses, which are very valuable for teachers and students.

Through these courses, we learn new methods and techniques in teaching Arabic, and we get to know the latest offerings in this field.

• What do you suggest to enhance cultural and linguistic cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan?

•• Saudi universities provide Azerbaijani students with opportunities to study in the Kingdom for varying periods each year, and this is a commendable initiative.

I suggest establishing a center for the Azerbaijani language or a cultural center in the Kingdom, in addition to sending Saudi students to our universities for training and benefiting from mutual experiences.

We also have ideas for joint projects; there is a village in Azerbaijan called "Arabs," but its residents do not speak Arabic today. It might be beneficial for Saudi researchers to visit it, get to know its residents, their customs, and traditions, and study them.

We can also invite Saudi writers to Azerbaijan, which would open a wider field for cultural acquaintance and communication.

• The relations between the Kingdom and Azerbaijan are developing.. where do you see the greatest opportunity to bring the two peoples closer?

•• I believe that the exchange of scholars, teachers, and students will be one of the most important means to deepen the ties between the two peoples from linguistic and cultural perspectives.

The relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan are evolving, and it is important that this is accompanied by more direct communication between people and scientific and cultural institutions.

• Do you see a greater space for cooperation between the universities of the two countries?

•• Certainly.. it would be beneficial for both sides to expand cooperation between Saudi and Azerbaijani universities in the fields of Arabic language and translation, in addition to the exchange of students, professors, and researchers.

There are opportunities that can be utilized, and expanding this cooperation would be beneficial for universities and students in both countries.

• After years of teaching and studying Arabic.. what does this language mean to you personally?

•• The Arabic language has become, for me, on both personal and academic levels, a means of understanding life, realizing one's self, appreciating the beauty of one's religion, and getting closer to God.

Arabic is, for me, "the key to sciences," and thanks to this key, I can read and understand many sciences.

I recommend those interested in the Arabic language in the Kingdom to learn it with love; because it opens the door to many sciences and knowledge.

Finally, I thank you and thank "Okaz" newspaper; for without the Arabic language and my knowledge of it, I would not have been able to communicate with you, and I am proud of this knowledge.
