Culture has lived through transformations and has interacted, whether by choice or necessity, with the data of the era. Over time, with the spread of the digital revolution, it has emerged from newspapers, books, and seminar halls, opening up to digital platforms to build bridges of communication and create pathways to reach the audience through video, podcasts, and interactive content on social media platforms. Content creators have emerged, offering knowledge and culture in ways that are closer to the audience, gradually transforming the practice from an individual activity or hobby into a professional field with its own tools and challenges. This transformation does not mean the end of the role of journalism and books, whether print or digital, or traditional media, but rather reflects an expansion in the channels of cultural presentation. Between genuine interaction with the content and superficial fabrication, we raise our questions about the nature of the cultural content creator, the skills they need, the limits of the relationship between attractiveness and depth, and the extent to which digital content can create an impact that goes beyond view counts.
Dr. Imad Abbas Al-Zahrani, a member of the Philosophy Association, believes that culture has not abandoned the book as a traditional format, despite the wide presence of digital media. He points out the continued strong presence of print books, citing the popularity of book fairs and the spread of reading among generations, alongside the growing presence of digital books. He emphasizes that new media, including podcasts and digital platforms, have not eliminated books but have added to the cultural scene and expanded opportunities for access to knowledge. He explains that one of the young participants in the "Read" competition at the King Abdulaziz Center for World Culture "Ithra" came from the farthest mountains of Al-Dair in Bani Malik in the south of the Kingdom, confirming that digital books online contributed to shaping his reading experience.
He considers cultural content to be a profession in its essence, before new job titles related to it emerged, pointing out that the content creator needs a broad knowledge base, an understanding of the nature of the target audience, and the ability to analyze their trends, along with writing and editing skills.
Regarding his personal experience, Al-Zahrani clarified that his beginning was through social media accounts, which did not initially reach the level of professional work, before the experience evolved with the interest of institutions and those around him in his fields of work and interests.
He noted that the absence of sustainability and short-term contracts, alongside the limited reach of some specialized topics, including philosophy, to a wider audience, are among the main challenges facing the cultural content creator.
He highlighted that the experience of transforming some famous philosophical dilemmas into interactive live experiences on the sidelines of philosophy conferences combined entertainment with cognitive discovery and attracted audience interest. He added that these models confirm the possibility of presenting culture in an attractive manner without losing its substance, and that the Philosophy Association aims to expand such experiences.
Regarding the role of cultural institutions, he affirmed that content creators have become partners in delivering culture to various segments of society, pointing out the interest, attraction, and support this group receives, while emphasizing the need for more attention to talents that possess distinguished content but have not yet gained wide public followership.
For his part, media figure Turki Al-Harbi sees that the challenge in the age of information flow does not lie in its scarcity, but in the ability to choose what deserves the audience's attention. He notes that the cultural content creator is not required to be an expert in everything, but needs curiosity, precision, and the ability to ask the right questions.
He explained that the success of content does not necessarily mean providing all the answers, as its value may lie in pushing the recipient to seek information and understand what lies behind it, affirming that good cultural content can be the beginning of a new knowledge journey.
Al-Harbi shared a personal experience, documenting a journey that started from inside his car and ended at one of the most famous clubs, capturing photos of the road and the course of the journey with his phone and conducting short interviews with participants, before transforming the material in the editing phase into a complete story.
He pointed out that the report achieved a wide reach that he did not expect, noting that the experience proved to him that content creation begins with an idea, and that small details can create a big story.
Meanwhile, writer Howaida Al-Mershid believes that cultural content has moved beyond the confines of books and seminar halls to a wider space that is closer to the audience, and that the content creator has become a partner in delivering knowledge in different ways. From her experience, she pointed out that the challenge is no longer in reaching the audience, but in maintaining the value and depth of the content in light of the speed of digital platforms. She emphasized that attractiveness is important in presenting cultural material, but it cannot be separated from knowledge, awareness, and responsibility for what is published. She considered one of the outcomes to be the transformation of a hobby into a profession, with content being an investment project that has a goal, tools, responsibility, and a unique voice belonging to its creator, making professionalism linked to the clarity and continuity of the idea, not merely to presence on platforms.
Writer Fatima Al-Qahtani noted that culture has expanded and transcended the realm of books, becoming more capable of reaching people thanks to digital platforms that have provided cultural workers with new spaces to present ideas in a way that is closer to the recipient and more in harmony with the era.
She affirmed that cultural content creation is turning into a profession if its creator realizes that what they offer is a responsibility, not just a presence or a search for popularity, pointing out that the content creator needs culture, knowledge, the ability to research and verify, along with possessing a unique identity and a distinctive mark that sets them apart in the crowded platforms.
Al-Qahtani emphasized that culture does not need to be presented in a heavy manner to maintain its value, as it can be deep, simple, and attractive at the same time.
She distinguished between those who create content to chase trends and those who have a message and idea they want to convey to the audience, affirming that the challenge today is no longer in owning a platform, as platforms are available to everyone, but in determining what the owner will present in terms of material capable of making an impact. She considered the presence of artificial intelligence in content creation an addition, as it has provided significant possibilities, yet it cannot create the creator's unique experience, voice, or feeling. She added that the true value of cultural content is not measured solely by view counts, but by what it leaves in the recipient; whether it inspires a new idea, leads them back to a book, or prompts them to start searching, questioning, and reading, and perhaps through that, they discover a talent or interest they had not previously noticed.
