The incident involving five female teachers and their driver east of Taif has once again brought the issue of transportation for teachers in remote schools to the forefront, in light of the risks posed by long daily journeys. This issue has persisted for years, during which accidents and calls for solutions to alleviate the hardships of the road and protect teachers on their commutes to and from their schools have continued.

A previous scientific paper presented at the first international conference on school transportation revealed that accidents involving female teachers accounted for 6.2% compared to 4% for the general community, recording 418 accidents during the period from 1419 to 1422 AH. Tire blowouts, speeding, and bad weather were the main causes of these accidents.

Since then, the issue of accidents involving female teachers has remained present, with the latest chapter occurring just a few days ago when a vehicle carrying five teachers near the center of Ridwan east of Taif was involved in a traffic accident, resulting in the deaths of all of them and their driver.

Journeys Exceeding 500 Kilometers

Testimonials from teachers and parents agree that traveling between cities, villages, and hamlets remains a perilous journey, especially with the long distances some teachers cover daily, accompanied by physical and psychological exhaustion and fears of accidents and breakdowns. The accident involving the teachers from the village of Hailan was one of the painful chapters in this file, as five teachers and their driver fell victim to a traffic accident on the road.

On the details of their day, the teachers of the Hailan Primary and Intermediate School gathered their travel belongings at four in the morning, preparing to cover more than 500 kilometers round trip, hoping to return after a hard day to spend the weekend with their families. However, that day turned out to be their last, in an accident that shattered their dreams and those of their driver.

Students Asking About Their Deceased Teacher

Teachers recounted to "Okaz" their struggles with daily travel, with Hind Mohammed stating that daily travel has become "a piece of torment," as she leaves her home before dawn to cover a distance of up to 200 kilometers, leaving her children with their father.

Jawhara Ali pointed out that she sometimes returns home after a grueling journey to sleep, only to wake up to prepare lessons for the next day, and she rarely meets her family members except on weekends.

As for Rawan Al-Otaibi, she explained that the tragedy of the death of one of her colleagues in a previous traffic accident has not left her mind, noting that her students still ask about her.

Kholoud Al-Otaibi had to move with her father and mother to live in a nearby village to the school, fearing daily road accidents, while Badriya Al-Otaibi described the suffering of teachers as increasing for pregnant teachers and those with newborns, emphasizing that the psychological and social pain is compounded.

When Will the Suffering End?

A teacher working outside Taif told "Okaz" that teachers cover a distance exceeding 480 kilometers round trip, leaving their homes at three in the morning and returning at four in the evening, amidst ongoing fears of road accidents and breakdowns that may affect their vehicles, in addition to physical and psychological exhaustion and fear of the unknown.

She questioned, "In the school where we work, there are teachers who leave daily to other locations with the same specialties, so why can't teachers settle in their villages and hamlets instead of enduring daily hardships and annual promises from the Ministry of Education to end the suffering?"

She noted that more than 500 female teachers travel from Taif to various directions, including the Riyadh road, the south, and the north and east of Taif.

In contrast, parents have called on the Ministry of Education to revisit the issue and find solutions to mitigate the risks of daily journeys. Fatima Mohammed stated that she lives in a remote area with a group of teachers in a house in one of the villages, returning at the end of the week to their families' areas. Several parents criticized what they described as randomness in appointments, stating that it leads to continued risks on the roads, especially since many teachers spend long hours reaching their workplaces.

The "Previous" Program... Solutions That Did Not Bear Fruit

The Ministry of Education had previously adopted a program for female teachers in remote schools, which aimed to reduce their working hours to three days a week on a rotating basis, while classes continued for five days, with the possibility of delaying the start of the workday by an hour depending on each school's circumstances, as part of solutions aimed at reducing the risks of teacher transportation following several traffic accidents in various regions.

However, the implementation of the program has not been present in the manner announced at that time, after the attendance program was applied, leading to the issue of long daily commutes resurfacing in demands once again.

Sustainable Practical Solutions

Specialists who spoke to "Okaz" believe that the continued transportation of teachers over long distances imposes educational, psychological, social, and regulatory dimensions, and that addressing the issue goes beyond dealing with accidents after they occur to preventive measures that reduce risks and ensure the safety of teachers.

Educational and instructional consultant Marzouk Mohammed Al-Thubaiti told "Okaz" that behind every accident involving a teacher on her way to school is a family waiting for her return, students expecting her presence, and a school affected by her absence, explaining that the accident involving the five teachers east of Al-Muwaiah brings back a humanitarian and educational file that deserves serious attention.

He added that when a teacher loses her life or is injured while fulfilling her mission, the impact of her absence does not stop at her family but extends to her colleagues, students, and the stability of the entire school.

Al-Thubaiti emphasized that the necessity for some teachers to cover long distances daily multiplies their physical and psychological burdens, making road safety a part of the stability of the educational environment, indicating that a teacher needs safety and reassurance to perform her mission efficiently and with focus.

He called for practical and sustainable solutions that begin with assessing the conditions of teachers who cover long distances, giving priority to their cases for transfer to schools closer to their residences whenever possible, in addition to studying the provision of safe housing near workplaces and developing organized public transportation that adheres to strict standards for vehicle safety and driver competence.

Al-Thubaiti concluded by emphasizing that the safety of teachers is not just a transportation issue, but a matter of education, quality of life, and social responsibility, and that those who carry the message of building generations have the right to reach their schools safely and return to their families unharmed.

Enduring Hardships Is Not a Measure of Dedication

Educational researcher Makhlid Al-Ruqai confirmed to "Okaz" that the safety of teachers should be an integral part of educational planning, explaining that a teacher who arrives at her school after a long and exhausting journey needs safety and stability to fulfill her mission and provide her students with attention, care, and quality education.

He stressed that a teacher's ability to endure the hardships of the road should not be a measure of her dedication, affirming that her right to life and safety precedes any demands for performance and achievement.

He added that the solution begins with addressing the reasons for long daily commutes by re-planning the distribution of teachers and schools, prioritizing transfers for those facing the most dangerous and arduous journeys, and expanding the qualification and employment of educational competencies from remote areas, preserving the right of students to stable and quality education.

He also called for providing safe professional transportation subject to actual oversight of vehicles, drivers, and driving hours, along with offering suitable and safe housing near schools for those who desire it, and establishing clear procedures for modifying attendance or suspending transportation when road risks increase.

Al-Ruqai suggested assessing the routes taken by teachers and evaluating their danger, and establishing clear responsibility for addressing them within a declared plan and indicators that measure the reduction of travel time and improvement of safety, emphasizing that ensuring justice for teachers begins when their suffering becomes a priority in educational decision-making, and when honoring the deceased is coupled with measures that protect their colleagues.

A Wound That Exceeds the Incident

Psychologist Amal Al-Juhani told "Okaz" that accidents involving teachers, especially those who travel long distances daily, leave a wound that extends beyond the site of the accident to their families and schools, explaining that the death of a teacher means a sudden loss of someone who is part of the family's security and stability, while an injury may leave everyone facing prolonged anxiety about her health and future.

She explained that the shock of loss within the family may be mixed with sadness and helplessness, while children may express their pain through fear, sleep disturbances, or attachment to those who remain around them. As for the surviving teacher, her fear of the road may persist even after her body has healed, and returning to work becomes a psychological challenge that requires understanding and support.

Al-Juhani noted that the sadness extends within the school to colleagues and students, as the absence of a teacher leaves a void in the human relationship that gives education its warmth, and may increase the anxiety of teachers who travel the same roads daily.

She emphasized that support begins with listening to feelings, respecting grief, avoiding the circulation of distressing images, and providing psychological support when needed, stressing that ensuring safe transportation and reducing its hardships is a responsibility that protects teachers and provides their families with the reassurance they deserve.

From Reporting the Incident to Following Up on Solutions

Assistant Professor in the Media Department at Taif University Dr. Bashayer Kamel Al-Harazi told "Okaz" that the role of the media in teacher accidents goes beyond reporting the details of the incident and the number of fatalities and injuries to investigating the reasons for their recurrence, in terms of the distance of workplaces, the length of commutes, and the safety of transportation means and roads.

She said that the media is required to present the issue in a comprehensive manner, by showcasing numbers and data, sharing teachers' experiences, consulting specialists, and opening the door for relevant authorities to clarify possible solutions, noting that the media does not have the solution by itself, but contributes to identifying the problem areas and proposing options for addressing them.

She added that among the solutions that can be discussed is providing safer means of transportation, reducing commuting distances, and reviewing the distribution of teachers and their workplaces, especially in remote areas, along with monitoring the roads where accidents frequently occur and understanding their causes.

Al-Harazi emphasized the importance of continuous follow-up, asserting that impactful media coverage does not end with publishing the story, but continues to track what has been proposed regarding it and what has been achieved on the ground, contributing to transforming interest in the issue into measurable steps for the future.

Missing Social Stability

Social specialist Amal Abdulqader explained to "Okaz" that the issue of teachers assigned to villages and remote areas deserves to be studied as a social and humanitarian issue with psychological, familial, and professional dimensions, and not merely a challenge related to transportation.

She added that daily commuting over long distances via rough roads, along with the exhaustion and delays in returning home, places the teacher and her family under constant pressure, as the family lives in a state of anxiety and anticipation with every journey, and this anxiety can turn into daily suffering that affects family stability, mental health, and quality of life.

Amal Abdulqader further stated that road accidents and the resulting injuries and fatalities are the harshest aspect of this issue, as behind every accident is a family receiving a shock, children who may lose their mother, and parents who may lose their daughter, along with a community bearing psychological and social effects that do not end with the incident.

She affirmed that safety is not something that can be postponed until a catastrophe occurs, and that preventive and proactive intervention is required, by providing safe transportation, suitable housing, improving roads, and reducing commuting distances, in addition to studying the social and psychological impact of hiring policies, indicating that a teacher carries a message, and it is the duty of the system to protect the person who carries this message, rather than waiting until danger becomes breaking news.

The Accident... "Work Injury"

Lawyer Nabil Malhan told "Okaz" that what happens to teachers who cover long distances daily to reach their remote schools is no longer just a transportation issue, but has become a matter affecting their safety and their employment and insurance rights.

He explained that the death of five teachers and their driver in the recent Taif accident has reopened the file, especially with reports indicating they traveled about 400 kilometers daily round trip.

Malhan pointed out that, from a legal perspective, Article (30) of the Social Insurance Law states that an accident occurring to a participant while commuting from their residence to their workplace or vice versa is considered a work injury, provided that the accident is linked to the usual route to work or returning from it, and it carries the prescribed insurance effects, without requiring the employee to arrive at the workplace.

Regarding transportation, he emphasized that a teacher should not bear the consequences of the distance of the workplace alone, noting that educational transportation is subject to need and preference, while providing a safe work environment remains an organizational responsibility.

He revealed that, concerning spatial contracts, the contract specifies the workplace.
