استبعد الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب استخدام الأسلحة النووية ضد إيران أو نشر قوات برية أمريكية داخل أراضيها، في وقت أقر فيه بصعوبة تحديد أطراف إيرانية يمكن التفاوض معها في ظل استهداف كبار المسؤولين في البلاد.
وخلال تجمع انتخابي في مدينة يونجستاون بولاية أوهايو،شدد الرئيس الأمريكي على أنه لن يُسمح لإيران بامتلاك أسلحة نووية، واصفاً إياها بأنها «الدولة الأولى الراعية للإرهاب».
وتطرق إلى التحديات التي تواجه المساعي الدبلوماسية لإنهاء النزاع مع طهران، قائلاً لأنصاره: «ربما نكون قد تمادينا كثيراً مع القادة؛ لأننا لم نعد نعرف، بحق الجحيم، مع من نتعامل».
وأضاف ترمب أن أحداً لا يرغب في تولي منصب رئيس إيران، مشيراً إلى أن المرشحين المحتملين لا يبدون استعداداً لتولي المسؤولية.
ورغم إقراره بالتعقيدات التي أفرزتها الحملة العسكرية ضد القيادة الإيرانية، جدد ترمب تأكيده أن العمليات الأمريكية ألحقت دماراً كبيراً بالقوات الجوية والبحرية الإيرانية.
كما زعم أن إيران فقدت سفنها البحرية الـ159، قائلاً إنها «تقبع بسلام في قاع البحر».
وكان ترمب قد أشار، الثلاثاء الماضي، إلى أن واشنطن ربما بالغت في استهداف القيادة الإيرانية، موضحاً أن مقتل مسؤولين بارزين زاد من تعقيد الجهود الرامية إلى تحديد شخصيات قادرة على الدخول في مفاوضات مع الولايات المتحدة.
U.S. President Donald Trump ruled out the use of nuclear weapons against Iran or the deployment of American ground troops within its territory, at a time when he acknowledged the difficulty of identifying Iranian parties that could be negotiated with amid the targeting of senior officials in the country.
During a campaign rally in Youngstown, Ohio, the U.S. president emphasized that Iran would not be allowed to possess nuclear weapons, describing it as "the number one state sponsor of terrorism."
He addressed the challenges facing diplomatic efforts to end the conflict with Tehran, telling his supporters: "Maybe we have gone too far with the leaders; because we no longer know, for the hell of it, who we are dealing with."
Trump added that no one wants to take on the position of President of Iran, noting that potential candidates do not seem willing to take on the responsibility.
Despite acknowledging the complexities brought about by the military campaign against the Iranian leadership, Trump reiterated that U.S. operations have inflicted significant damage on the Iranian air and naval forces.
He also claimed that Iran has lost its 159 naval ships, stating that they "lie peacefully at the bottom of the sea."
Trump had indicated last Tuesday that Washington may have overdone its targeting of the Iranian leadership, explaining that the killing of prominent officials has complicated efforts to identify individuals capable of entering negotiations with the United States.
