استيقظت سورينام على صدمة جديدة، بعدما تحولت قضية واحدة من أبشع الجرائم الدموية في تاريخها الحديث إلى فاجعة مضاعفة، عقب إعلان الشرطة وفاة الرجل المتهم بارتكاب مجزرة جماعية، إثر إقدامه على الانتحار داخل محبسه أثناء احتجازه للتحقيق.

وأكدت الشرطة السورينامية في بيان رسمي أن المتهم دينيس أروما (43 عاما) وُجد بلا أي مؤشرات حياة داخل زنزانته في مركز شرطة وسط العاصمة باراماريبو، في تطور مفاجئ أغلق أحد أكثر الملفات دموية في البلاد قبل وصوله إلى قاعة المحكمة.

وتعود القضية إلى حادثة مروعة شهدتها منطقة ريشيليو في إقليم كوميوينه، عندما نفّذ المتهم هجوما وحشيا باستخدام سكين، أسفر عن مقتل 9 أشخاص، بينهم أربعة من أطفاله، إضافة إلى خمسة من الجيران من ضمنهم طفل، في مشهد دموي هز المجتمع السورينامي من أقصاه إلى أقصاه.

وإلى جانب الضحايا، أُصيب شخصان آخران بجروح بالغة نُقلا على إثرها إلى المستشفى، فيما تدخلت قوات الأمن عقب تلقي البلاغ. وذكرت الشرطة أن المتهم رفض الاستسلام وحاول مقاومة القبض عليه، ما اضطر العناصر إلى إطلاق النار على ساقه للسيطرة عليه وإنهاء الهجوم.

وبعد إسعافه في أحد المستشفيات المحلية، جرى تحويل أروما إلى مركز شرطة كايزرسترات في باراماريبو، حيث وُضع رهن الاحتجاز بانتظار استكمال التحقيقات، قبل أن يُعثر عليه لاحقا منتحرا داخل زنزانته.

وكشفت التحقيقات الأولية أن المتهم كان يعاني من اضطرابات نفسية وتلقى علاجا طبيا في وقت سابق، بينما أفاد سكان المنطقة بأن الحادثة سبقتها مشادة هاتفية حادة بينه وبين زوجته، التي لا يعيش معها، بشأن اصطحاب الأطفال. ووفق إفادات الجيران، أخبرته الزوجة بأنها لن تأتي بنفسها وسترسل شخصا آخر، الأمر الذي يُعتقد أنه فجّر انهيارا نفسيا مفاجئا لديه.

وعلى وقع الفاجعة، زار وزير العدل هاريش مونوراث ووزيرة الشؤون الاجتماعية والإسكان ديانا بوكي موقع الجريمة، حيث وصفت الأخيرة ما جرى بأنه صدمة غير مسبوقة للمجتمع السورينامي.

بدورها، عبّرت رئيسة سورينام جينيفر سيمونز عن حزنها العميق، مقدمة تعازيها لعائلات الضحايا، وكتبت عبر فيسبوك أن العالم كشف وجها قاسيا حين يتحول الأب إلى قاتل لأبنائه ويزهق أرواح جيرانه في اللحظة نفسها.

وتقع سورينام شمال أمريكا الجنوبية بين غيانا وغويانا الفرنسية على البحر الكاريبي، ويبلغ عدد سكانها نحو 630 ألف نسمة، إلا أن هذه الحادثة الدامية تجاوزت حدود الدولة الصغيرة، مثيرة موجة غضب وحزن واسعة داخل البلاد وخارجها.

Suriname woke up to a new shock, as one of the most heinous blood crimes in its modern history turned into a compounded tragedy, following the police announcement of the death of the man accused of committing a mass murder, after he committed suicide in his cell while being held for investigation.

The Surinamese police confirmed in an official statement that the accused, Denis Aroma (43 years old), was found without any signs of life in his cell at the police station in the capital, Paramaribo, in a surprising development that closed one of the bloodiest cases in the country before it reached the courtroom.

The case dates back to a horrific incident that took place in the Richelieu area of the Commewijne district, when the accused carried out a brutal attack using a knife, resulting in the deaths of 9 people, including four of his children, in addition to five neighbors, including a child, in a bloody scene that shook the Surinamese community from end to end.

Alongside the victims, two other individuals sustained serious injuries and were transported to the hospital, while security forces intervened after receiving the report. The police stated that the accused refused to surrender and attempted to resist arrest, which forced the officers to shoot him in the leg to control him and end the attack.

After being treated in a local hospital, Aroma was transferred to the Kaiserstraat police station in Paramaribo, where he was held in custody pending the completion of investigations, before he was later found to have committed suicide in his cell.

Initial investigations revealed that the accused was suffering from psychological disorders and had received medical treatment earlier, while residents of the area reported that the incident was preceded by a heated phone argument between him and his wife, with whom he does not live, regarding taking the children. According to neighbors' accounts, the wife told him that she would not come herself and would send someone else, which is believed to have triggered a sudden psychological breakdown in him.

In the wake of the tragedy, Justice Minister Harish Monorath and Minister of Social Affairs and Housing Diana Pokie visited the crime scene, where the latter described what happened as an unprecedented shock for the Surinamese community.

For her part, Suriname's President Jennifer Simmons expressed her deep sorrow, offering her condolences to the families of the victims, and wrote on Facebook that the world revealed a cruel face when a father turns into a killer of his own children and takes the lives of his neighbors at the same moment.

Suriname is located in northern South America between Guyana and French Guiana on the Caribbean Sea, with a population of about 630,000. However, this bloody incident has transcended the borders of the small state, provoking a wave of anger and grief both within the country and beyond.
