في كشفٍ جيولوجي يقلب الموازين ويعيد رسم تاريخ منطقة الشرق الأوسط، نجح فريق علمي دولي في فك شفرة اللغز الأكبر حول نشأة نهر الفرات العظيم، مهد الحضارات الإنسانية الأولى. فوفقاً لدراسة مثيرة نشرتها دورية «نيتشر جيوساينس» المرموقة، تبين أن هذا النهر الأسطوري لم يكن بشكله الحالي منذ الأزل، بل وُلد قبل نحو 1.6 إلى 3.6 مليون سنة نتيجة «حادثة تصادم جيولوجي» عنيفة، حين تسبب النشاط التكتوني المتواصل والزلازل في جبال طوروس (جنوب تركيا الحالية) في دمج نظامين نهريين منفصلين تماماً، كانا يمثلان الأسلاف القديمة لنهري «قره صو» و«مراد» الحاليين. هذان النهران القديمان كانا يتدفقان في مسارات مستقلة ويصبان مباشرة في حوض البحر الأبيض المتوسط، وتحديداً خلال حقبة سحيقة تعود لأكثر من خمسة ملايين عام، وهي الفترة التي شهدت جفاف أجزاء واسعة من البحر فيما يُعرف تاريخياً بـ «أزمة الملوحة الميسينية». ومع تحرك الصفائح الأرضية، انحرف مسار النهر الأول نحو الخليج، ليلتحم به النهر الثاني لاحقاً، مشكّلين معاً هذا الشريان المائي الهادر الذي غير وجه التاريخ.
هذا الاختراق العلمي المذهل لم يكن ليرى النور لولا استخدام تقنية ثورية أشبه بالخيال العلمي؛ حيث اعتمد الباحثون على «التصوير الزلزالي» ثلاثي الأبعاد لاختراق باطن الأرض وقاع البحر، متتبعين الموجات الصوتية التي ترتد عن الصخور لرسم خرائط فائقة الدقة لقنوات نهرية قديمة ظلت مدفونة ومخفية لملايين السنين. الجيولوجي سيمون لانغ، من جامعة وسترن أستراليا، والذي قاد البحث بالتعاون مع الخبير آندرو مادوف، وصف هذه العملية ببراعة قائلاً إن التقنية تشبه تماماً استخدام «الموجات فوق الصوتية» (السونار) لتصوير الأجنة، لكنها هنا تلتقط التفاصيل الدقيقة للحصى، والرمال، ورواسب الفحم المكبوسة التي تحولت إلى صخور تحت جبال طوروس شاهقة الارتفاع. ولم تكن هذه الدراسة مجرد رحلة في أعماق الجيولوجيا الصامتة، بل إن العلماء يصفون فك شفرة ولادة الفرات بأنه مفتاح إلهامي لفهم كيف ولدت الثقافة البشرية نفسها؛ فمن رحم هذا الاندماج النهري العنيف تشكلت السهول الفيضية الخصبة التي احتضنت أولى خطوات الإنسان في مجالات الزراعة، وبناء المدن، واختراع الكتابة، ليتضح أن تقلبات الأرض العنيفة هي التي صنعت، حرفياً، مهد الحضارة الإنسانية.
In a geological revelation that turns the scales and redraws the history of the Middle East, an international scientific team has succeeded in unraveling the greatest mystery surrounding the origin of the great Euphrates River, the cradle of early human civilizations. According to an intriguing study published in the prestigious journal "Nature Geoscience," it has been revealed that this legendary river has not existed in its current form since time immemorial; rather, it was born approximately 1.6 to 3.6 million years ago as a result of a violent "geological collision," when continuous tectonic activity and earthquakes in the Taurus Mountains (in present-day southern Turkey) merged two completely separate river systems, which represented the ancient ancestors of the current "Kara Su" and "Murad" rivers. These ancient rivers flowed in independent paths and directly fed into the Mediterranean Sea, specifically during a distant era more than five million years ago, a period that witnessed the drying up of vast parts of the sea in what is historically known as the "Messinian Salinity Crisis." As the tectonic plates moved, the path of the first river was diverted towards the Gulf, later merging with the second river, together forming this roaring waterway that changed the course of history.
This astonishing scientific breakthrough would not have seen the light of day without the use of a revolutionary technique akin to science fiction; researchers relied on three-dimensional "seismic imaging" to penetrate the Earth's crust and the seabed, tracking the sound waves that bounce off rocks to create ultra-accurate maps of ancient river channels that had remained buried and hidden for millions of years. Geologist Simon Lang from Western Australia University, who led the research in collaboration with expert Andrew Madoff, brilliantly described this process by saying that the technique is very similar to using "ultrasound" (sonar) to image embryos, but here it captures the fine details of gravel, sand, and compressed coal deposits that have turned into rock beneath the towering Taurus Mountains. This study was not merely a journey into the depths of silent geology; scientists describe deciphering the birth of the Euphrates as an inspirational key to understanding how human culture itself was born; from the womb of this violent river merger, the fertile floodplains that embraced humanity's first steps in agriculture, city-building, and the invention of writing were formed, making it clear that violent earth fluctuations literally created the cradle of human civilization.
