Scientists have found that people are not as directionally neutral as they may seem when they walk freely. Across experiments in Spain and Japan, pedestrians showed a consistent tendency to turn left and move counterclockwise, even when they were not following a route or copying a crowd.

The finding began as an unexpected clue during pandemic-era research on social distancing, then became a separate study published in Nature Communications on June 10, 2026. The pattern is real enough to matter, but the reason behind it remains unresolved.
