أعادت مذكرات جديدة لشقيق الأميرة ديانا تشارلز سبنسر فتح ملفات قديمة داخل العائلة المالكة البريطانية، بعدما تضمنت روايات وتفاصيل غير مسبوقة عن علاقة أميرة ويلز بالعائلة، من بينها ما قيل عن لقبها الملكي ومواقف نسبت إلى الملك تشارلز بعد وفاتها وقبل زواجه منها.
وفي مذكراته التي حملت عنوان «Swan Song: Diana, My Sister»، قال سبنسر، البالغ 62 عامًا، إن الملكة إليزابيث الثانية عرضت إعادة لقب «صاحبة السمو الملكي» (HRH) إلى ديانا يوم جنازتها في سبتمبر 1997، بعد أن جُردت منه إثر طلاقها من الملك تشارلز، الذي كان حينها أمير ويلز.
وذكر سبنسر أن سكرتير الملكة الخاص أبلغه بالعرض أثناء وجوده على متن القطار الملكي المتجه إلى مراسم دفن ديانا، لكنه رفضه، معتبرًا أن إعادة اللقب بعد وفاتها لا معنى لها، وأنه كان يجب ألا يُسحب منها في حياتها.
وتتضمن المذكرات كذلك رواية منسوبة إلى الملك تشارلز، قال فيها لشقيق ديانا بعد أيام من وفاتها: «اطمئن، سننساها قريبًا بما فيه الكفاية». كما نقل سبنسر أن تشارلز أخبر ديانا، قبل يوم من زفافهما عام 1981، بأنه سعيد بالزواج منها، لكنه «ليس مغرمًا بها».
وأثارت هذه الروايات ردًا نادرًا من القصر الملكي، الذي نفى صحتها، معتبرًا أن الحزن على فقدان شقيقته قد يؤثر في رؤية سبنسر للأحداث ويغيّر طريقة تذكره لها. كما رأى مراقبون للشأن الملكي أن حدة الرد تعكس حجم الجدل الذي أثارته المذكرات داخل الأوساط الملكية.
وتأتي هذه الروايات قبل الذكرى الثلاثين لوفاة ديانا، لتعيد تفاصيل علاقتها بالعائلة المالكة إلى الواجهة، وتفتح مجددًا النقاش حول الأحداث التي أحاطت بحياتها وزواجها ووفاتها.
New memoirs by Princess Diana's brother Charles Spencer have reopened old files within the British royal family, as they include unprecedented accounts and details about the Princess of Wales's relationship with the family, including what was said about her royal title and positions attributed to King Charles after her death and before his marriage to her.
In his memoir titled "Swan Song: Diana, My Sister," Spencer, who is 62 years old, stated that Queen Elizabeth II offered to restore the title of "Her Royal Highness" (HRH) to Diana on the day of her funeral in September 1997, after she had been stripped of it following her divorce from King Charles, who was then the Prince of Wales.
Spencer mentioned that the Queen's private secretary informed him of the offer while he was on the royal train heading to Diana's burial ceremony, but he rejected it, considering that restoring the title after her death was meaningless and that it should not have been taken from her during her lifetime.
The memoirs also include an account attributed to King Charles, in which he told Diana's brother days after her death: "Don't worry, we will forget her soon enough." Spencer also relayed that Charles told Diana, the day before their wedding in 1981, that he was happy to marry her, but he "was not in love with her."
These accounts have prompted a rare response from the royal palace, which denied their accuracy, suggesting that the grief over the loss of his sister may affect Spencer's perception of events and alter the way he remembers her. Royal observers noted that the intensity of the response reflects the level of controversy the memoirs have stirred within royal circles.
These accounts come ahead of the thirtieth anniversary of Diana's death, bringing details of her relationship with the royal family back to the forefront and reopening discussions about the events surrounding her life, marriage, and death.
