A series of consecutive earthquakes struck areas in southern Turkey on Sunday, felt by residents in northern Syria, with the strongest tremor reaching a magnitude of 5.2. Turkish emergency teams are mobilizing to ensure that no damage or injuries have occurred.

According to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the strong tremors began at 2:19 PM local time, when an earthquake measuring 4.8 struck the Saymbeili area in Adana province at a depth of 7.99 kilometers.

About 17 minutes later, at 2:36 PM, the region experienced a second tremor of 4.9 magnitude at a depth of 8.67 kilometers, before the strongest quake was recorded a few minutes later, reaching 5.2 magnitude at 2:43 PM at a depth of about 7 kilometers.

5 Tremors Felt by Residents of Syria

The National Earthquake Center in Syria announced that its monitoring stations recorded five main earthquakes on Sunday, all in southern Turkey, which were felt by residents in northern Syrian areas.

The center clarified that the first three tremors occurred within less than half an hour after 2 PM, followed by two additional tremors in the evening, the first at 7:00 PM and the second at 8:28 PM.

It noted a slight difference in the estimates of the magnitudes and locations of the tremors between the data from the Syrian and Turkish monitoring networks, as the Syrian center estimated the magnitudes of the first three tremors at 4.4, 4.4, and 4.6, while AFAD recorded them at 4.8, 4.9, and 5.2.

“Seismic Swarm”

The National Earthquake Center in Syria described the recorded activity as a “seismic swarm” occurring within an active tectonic range along the East Anatolian fault and its associated fault structures.

It explained that the data indicate a gradual release of the accumulated tectonic stress in the area, suggesting that the activity is likely to decrease gradually over a period of 24 to 48 hours, unless a new tremor exceeding 5.2 occurs.

No Losses Reported So Far

In response, Turkish authorities deployed teams to conduct field surveys following the earthquakes. Adana Governor Mustafa Yavuz confirmed that the emergency center 112 had not received reports of damage or injuries, while authorities in Osmaniye also reported no negative situations following the strongest tremor.

The Turkish Ministry of Interior confirmed that AFAD teams and relevant authorities began surveying immediately after the tremors, and initial reports did not record any human or material losses.
