A sailor in the British Royal Navy appeared in court in London after being accused of obtaining and retaining sensitive defense and intelligence information and taking preliminary steps to disclose it for the benefit of Russia.
The British public prosecutor stated that Teddy Young (24 years old) was working in naval operations intelligence and held a high-level security clearance that allowed him access to sensitive defense and intelligence systems and information.
The prosecution accuses Young of accessing and retaining protected information, along with activities that it claims align with preparations to pass information to a foreign power.
A message in Russian
Details presented before Westminster Court revealed that Young prepared a message in Russian that included confidential information and took steps that the prosecution said were aimed at directly communicating with Russian authorities. He was also accused of using the "dark web" in an attempt to reach them.
The authorities also accuse him of copying and retaining protected information during the period from November 26, 2024, to May 21, 2025.
Two charges under national security
The British capital police announced that Young faces two charges under the National Security Act of 2023.
The first charge relates to preparatory acts in anticipation of disclosing protected information, while the second pertains to obtaining, copying, recording, or retaining protected information with the intent to benefit a foreign power, knowing or having reason to know that this could harm the security or interests of the United Kingdom.
His arrest at home
Young was arrested by the anti-terrorism police at his home in Bedfordshire on October 6, before being transferred to custody in London, while the British public prosecutor authorized the charges against him the following day.
Young had been initially arrested in May 2025, before being released on bail pending investigation, with his security clearance suspended and removed from his duties.
"Extremely serious charges"
London's anti-terrorism police chief, Helen Flanagan, stated that the charges are "extremely serious" as they are directed at an individual working in the armed forces, emphasizing that investigators worked closely with the British Ministry of Defense to take appropriate measures to mitigate any potential risks associated with the case.
Referral to "Old Bailey"
The court decided to keep Young in custody and referred the case to the Central Criminal Court in London, "Old Bailey," where he is scheduled to appear again on October 16.
The British Royal Navy confirmed the charges against one of its members but refrained from commenting on the details of the case while legal proceedings are ongoing.
The case is still at the accusation stage, and no conviction has been issued against Young so far.
