The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the safe exit of 15 Egyptian sailors stranded in Ukraine to Moldova, in preparation for their return to Egypt, after their ships were subjected to military operations in the Black Sea.

The official spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Nader Zaki, stated that the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and Egyptians Abroad, Badr Abdel Aty, directed the consular sector of the ministry and the two Egyptian embassies in Ukraine and Romania to expedite the procedures for the sailors and facilitate their return to the country as soon as possible.

The spokesperson explained that the embassies worked to ensure that the sailors obtained transit visas to Moldova, after extracting the necessary identification documents, and communicated with the companies they work for to arrange their travel back to Egypt.

He added that the sailors were indeed able to cross the border into Moldova, where arrangements for their travel to Egypt on the next available flight are being finalized.

This Egyptian move comes amid the increasing risks facing commercial ships and their crews in the Black Sea, as the Russian-Ukrainian war continues and the scope of military operations threatens ports and maritime shipping routes.

In recent days, the region has witnessed incidents of targeting commercial ships using drones. On October 6, two commercial ships were attacked in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea; one sank, while the other was damaged and its crew evacuated. The identity of the party responsible for the attack has not been independently determined, amid mutual accusations regarding responsibility for military operations in the area.

Additionally, last July, a drone attack targeted a cargo ship in the port of Pivdennyi in the Odessa region of Ukraine, resulting in the death of an Egyptian sailor and two Syrian sailors, according to Egyptian media reports. These incidents highlight the dangers faced by civilian sailors in conflict areas, even when the ships they work on are designated for commercial transport.

The evacuation operation is part of the consular role played by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to monitor the conditions of citizens abroad, especially in areas of armed conflict, by coordinating with diplomatic missions, local authorities, and employers to provide safe exit routes.

Commercial shipping in the Black Sea faces increasing challenges since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war in February 2022, with ports, commercial ships, and maritime transport-related facilities subjected to repeated attacks. These risks affect the safety of ship crews, as well as shipping and insurance costs and the continuity of trade movement across the region.

Cairo continues, according to the Foreign Ministry's statement, to coordinate to finalize arrangements for the sailors' return to the country after securing their transfer to neighboring Moldova.
