تسبب عطل في دائرة اتصالات وقطع كابل ألياف ضوئية احتياطي، أمس (الإثنين)، في اضطراب واسع لحركة الطيران في الولايات المتحدة، وأجبر إدارة الطيران الفيدرالية الأمريكية على وقف الرحلات القادمة مؤقتاً إلى عدد من المطارات الرئيسية في نيويورك وبوسطن وفيلادلفيا.
وأظهرت بيانات «فلايت أوير» أن أكثر من 5600 رحلة جوية في الولايات المتحدة تعرضت للتأخير أو الإلغاء، بينها نحو 1200 رحلة في المطارات الثلاثة الرئيسية بمنطقة نيويورك، فيما جرى تحويل أكثر من 100 رحلة إلى مطارات أخرى.
تعطل الخط الرئيسي والاحتياطي
وقال مدير إدارة الطيران الفيدرالية برايان بيدفورد إن المشكلة بدأت بتعطل دائرة اتصالات رئيسية في منشأة لمراقبة الحركة الجوية في فيلادلفيا، وعندما حاول النظام الانتقال إلى الخط الاحتياطي، تبين أن كابل الألياف الضوئية الاحتياطي تعرض للقطع في نيوجيرسي.
وأدى العطل إلى وقف الرحلات القادمة، في مراحل مختلفة، إلى مطارات جون إف. كينيدي ولاغوارديا ونيوارك في منطقة نيويورك، إلى جانب مطاري فيلادلفيا وبوسطن ومطارات أخرى في المنطقة.
اضطراب تزامن مع اجتماعات الأمم المتحدة
وتزامنت الاضطرابات مع وصول نحو 130 من قادة العالم وعشرات الوزراء إلى نيويورك للمشاركة في الاجتماعات السنوية رفيعة المستوى للجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة.
وأكدت إدارة الطيران الفيدرالية أنها لن تستأنف الحركة في المطارات المتأثرة قبل التأكد من سلامة المجال الجوي.
إصلاح الخطوط واستئناف العمليات
وفي تحديث لاحق، أعلن وزير النقل الأمريكي شون دافي إصلاح خطوط الاتصالات واستئناف العمليات في جميع مطارات شمال شرق الولايات المتحدة.
وسلط الحادث الضوء مجدداً على مشكلات البنية التحتية لنظام مراقبة الحركة الجوية الأمريكي، الذي خصص له الكونغرس العام الماضي 12.5 مليار دولار لتحديثه، فيما طالب دافي بتوفير 17.5 مليار دولار إضافية لاستكمال أعمال التطوير.
A malfunction in a communications circuit and the cutting of a backup fiber optic cable yesterday (Monday) caused widespread disruption to air traffic in the United States, forcing the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to temporarily halt incoming flights to several major airports in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia.
Data from "FlightAware" showed that more than 5,600 flights in the United States were delayed or canceled, including about 1,200 flights at the three major airports in the New York area, while over 100 flights were diverted to other airports.
Main and Backup Line Failure
FAA Administrator Brian Bedford stated that the problem began with a failure in a main communications circuit at an air traffic control facility in Philadelphia, and when the system attempted to switch to the backup line, it was found that the backup fiber optic cable had been cut in New Jersey.
The malfunction led to the suspension of incoming flights, at various stages, to John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, and Newark airports in the New York area, as well as to Philadelphia and Boston airports and other airports in the region.
Disruption Coinciding with UN Meetings
The disruptions coincided with the arrival of about 130 world leaders and dozens of ministers in New York for the high-level annual meetings of the United Nations General Assembly.
The FAA confirmed that it would not resume operations at the affected airports until the safety of the airspace was ensured.
Repairing Lines and Resuming Operations
In a later update, U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the repair of communication lines and the resumption of operations at all airports in the Northeast United States.
The incident once again highlighted issues with the infrastructure of the U.S. air traffic control system, which Congress allocated $12.5 billion last year for upgrades, while Duffy called for an additional $17.5 billion to complete development work.
