The researcher and writer in literature and thought, Osama bin Yahya Al-Wasili, is one of the active young names in our cultural scene. His relationship with criticism is not merely a reading of the text from a ready theoretical perspective, nor is it a practice that derives its legitimacy solely from the authority of the critic. His relationship with criticism is a dual test of the text we read and the tools we use to read it.
His questions in criticism begin from his critical sensitivity towards what he sees as flattery, or an ease in issuing judgments, or the dominance of the name over the text, or the transformation of methodologies into molds that precede the literary work rather than emerge from it.
In this dialogue, we move with Al-Wasili from his initial relationship with criticism and the questions that led him to it, to the influence of philosophy, logic, and reading outside of literature in shaping his critical eye, to "the right of the text and the authority of the methodology," his critical project, and his bet on "the critique of criticism," because he sees it as a necessity for reviewing the tools that have settled in the Arab critical practice.
We go further with Al-Wasili to question the very concept of neutrality itself, and his proposal of "regulated fairness" instead of complete neutrality.
And because the dialogue expanded from the text to the cultural scene, we paused with Al-Wasili at the impact of flattery in creating a false literary memory, at the relationship between awards and events and the creative movement, and at the gap between the rapid transformations witnessed by Saudi literature and the slow critical accumulation capable of explaining them. We also discussed with him the conditions for the transition of Saudi literature from mere introduction to producing its own critical questions, and placing the critic's independence before the question of the cultural institution: How can knowledge be supported without buying its results?!... So, to the text of the dialogue:
• Let us start with your relationship with criticism; how did it begin?
•• Perhaps it began with the questions that lead to criticism, such as: Why do we consider this beautiful? How does taste turn into judgment? And why do two critics read the same text and come out with two vastly different conclusions? Philosophy and logic helped me in this path, and then my reading expanded in ancient criticism, including issues of poetry, rhetoric, balance, and the justification of judgments, among others. After that, modern criticism and its theories and applications came, which I greatly appreciate. As these readings expanded, it became clear to me that the problem is not always in the text or the theory, but often in the way they meet, and I think this is where the disagreement lies for many who engage with criticism. Another question began to press on me, which has remained present in almost every reading since: What did the critic actually reveal in the text, and what did he bring with him and then see in it? This is because the theory seems coherent as long as it is in its abstract space, but when it enters a specific text, it is tested; and there its limits appear, and the critic's ability to use it without making the text subordinate to it is revealed.
I think there is something in this answer that occupies me now; if you were to ask me in a year, this part of it might change.
• Is there a critic or reading experience that has left an impact on your view of literature?
•• Influence is naturally present; through personalities, methodologies, and ways of thinking, and even those who think they have escaped it carry in their language and questions something of what they have read before. In fact, this question confuses me just as the first question did; because it pushes me to talk about myself in a way that approaches self-disclosure, and I tend to let the reader infer my influences from my judgments, from my way of reading, and from the questions that recur in my writing. Because, in my view, influence is broader than being attributed to a specific critic or book; long reading creates layers in the mind that we do not always know how they were formed. A book we disagreed with may have a greater impact than a book we agreed with, and a single question from a complete book may have a longer lifespan than all its answers. Over the years, my reading has expanded outside of literature, and this has changed the meaning of influence for me; some theses and topics give you a new eye to see something you previously passed by without noticing it. The most honest answer I can give is that the most deeply rooted influences are those whose names are forgotten over time, yet remain in the eye with which we read.
• Do you have a critical project today?
•• It is a given for me not to disclose a project before it is fully formed; ideas are common among people, and whoever has them should keep them until they are completed. However, I will hint at it without stating it explicitly.
If by project you mean a written project, then yes, I am working on the project "The Right of the Text and the Authority of the Method..." and I consider it a natural extension of what has occupied me in recent years; criticism has been accustomed to asking: Which methodology do we apply? Then it quickly moves to application. My question, however, is a little earlier than that, and perhaps more annoying: Who granted this methodology the right to enter this text in the first place? Why this methodology over others? Is there in the text evidence and structure that grants it the legitimacy of presence, or did the critic summon it because he has a methodology searching for a text? If you are asking about a practical project in the cultural field: then yes, I am also concerned that the practice of "critique of criticism" becomes a natural part of our cultural life, because I fear for any cultural arena that does not review its critics that it may turn over time into a small temple where idols multiply, and around every name its followers circle, making questioning the statement an offense to its speaker and reviewing the critic an assault on their status.
The importance of the critique of criticism lies in questioning the critical process itself, and because if we want to produce new critical trends or methodologies, or theories that explore our particularities and attempt to solve our specific problems, we must first question the tools and test their capabilities and limits, then propose what transcends their shortcomings. The discussion on this is lengthy.
• The convictions of the critic, is there a fear that they may turn into constraints preventing them from discovering new aesthetics?
•• No critic exists without convictions; because their choice of the question itself entails a conception of beauty, meaning, and evidence. However, the real danger arises when conviction transforms from a potential hypothesis that enters the text to a device that prevents them from seeing what does not conform to it. Every critical conviction for me has a shelf life in front of the text; if a great text comes and manages to produce beauty that my tools cannot accommodate, then the problem lies in my tools, not in the text. And take this from me: criticism that cannot adjust its standards quickly turns into literary police; it predefines what can be poetry, a novel, or beauty, and then distributes permits. Yet, I do not support the opposite side that has introduced a third element, making openness an excuse to abolish all standards. Flexibility does not mean that anything is permissible; because there is one thing I will not concede: evidence. The critic can venture into interpretation as they wish, but they must clarify the path they took from the text to the conclusion.
• Flattery in receiving literary works, has it turned into a phenomenon with consequences for the future of literature?
•• Flattery is more dangerous than it seems; because it corrupts the entire measurement apparatus. When every collection is astonishing, every novel exceptional, and every publication an event, these qualities lose their ability to distinguish, and the biggest loser is the good work; because we deprive it of the language it deserves to be praised with. What will we say to a great writer if we have exhausted the term "great" in 10 mediocre books? The problem is thus cognitive and aesthetic, not merely an ethical issue concerning the honesty of the critic alone. Furthermore, flattery creates a false literary memory; a researcher may come years later to reception materials and find everyone to be pioneers, renewers, and exceptional, and this, I assure you, is a crime against ourselves first and then against future generations.
• How can we reconcile encouraging new talents with flattery that may spoil the text and taste?
•• By separating two rights: the right of the writer to encouragement and the right of the text to judgment. We can preserve the writer's dignity and the text's truth; the emerging talent needs a critic who discovers its strengths and accurately identifies its weaknesses. The worst thing we can do to a young writer is to convince them too early that they have arrived; at that point, praise turns into destruction, and the writer begins to protect the image they have created through flattery, fearing experimentation. Perhaps every subsequent criticism becomes an assault on a status they thought was established.
In our heritage, there is an example of this meaning in "the mu'tamats," which I addressed in my book "Literary Battles: The Dialectic of Resurrection and Annihilation." The novice poet would recite their poem and then conceal it before hearing the critic's judgment. One of the most prominent examples is the story of Al-Kumayt with Al-Farazdaq when he recited his poem that begins with:
I was delighted, not out of longing for the white ones,
Nor for play from me while the gray-haired plays.
He concealed it, then went to Al-Farazdaq and said to him: If it is good, command me to announce it; if it is bad, command me to conceal it. Al-Farazdaq continued to discuss it with him until he said: "Announce it, announce it." In this story, there is something we miss today; encouragement came after testing and criticism, and the creator himself sought a judgment to reassure him.
• Did Arabic poetic modernity fail to produce alternative aesthetic standards, or is it the criticism that has failed to discover them?
•• The formulation of the question first requires deconstructing the term "modernity." I have previously written in my articles about the mistake of transforming heritage and modernity into two monolithic blocks; poetic modernity itself consists of experiences, schools, and degrees, and it is incorrect to issue a single judgment on it. I see that the problem in some Arab theorizing of poetic renewal is that the concern to liberate the poem from some of its old conditions was clearer than the concern to define the standards by which good renewal is distinguished from weak writing. Here, the confusion arose between the legitimacy of deviating from the norm and the quality of the text resulting from it; although violating the rule does not, in itself, grant the text aesthetic value. I discussed this issue in my talk about Adonis when he returned in his later years to complain about the absence of standards, revealing a significant paradox: the project that expanded the authority of "the transformative" ultimately needs a standard to differentiate within the transformative itself. For example, free verse is not the culprit, and it contains texts of great beauty; the problem lies in a critical discourse that long defended the legitimacy of form more than it exercised sufficient rigor in sorting its models. I find that our task now is more challenging than demolition and defense; it lies in re-establishing the standard after the unrestrained freedom, and the standard I seek penetrates the aesthetic energy in the text; its tension, density, internal rhythm, and structure, and its ability to transform language from mere reporting to creation. At the same time, it grants every aesthetic form its own boundaries that preserve its distinction from others, so that the differences between forms remain meaningful, and thus renewal becomes a test of quality, while novelty alone loses its ability to grant the text critical immunity.
• The transformations witnessed by Saudi literature, do you see that critical production keeps pace with the volume of literary publications and events?
•• The truth is that Saudi cultural institutions have achieved a structural miracle in a few years that we did not imagine in the near future. We are facing transformations that require criticism that does not merely describe what has occurred after it happens, because if criticism precedes media, the critic becomes a commentator on the transformation, not a partner in understanding it. Here lies the responsibility of critics: Are we producing a interpretive language that matches this transformation? Are we creating concepts that emerge from our experience and can be circulated both Arabically and globally? I see that we are witnessing today a flourishing cultural event accompanied by a relative lack of interpretive accumulation. I do not mean, of course, the absence of serious criticism; we have important studies and critics, but the speed of transformation is greater than the speed of building the concepts that explain it.
• Have awards and cultural events contributed to creating a sustainable creative movement, or is their impact still in need of study and evaluation?
•• They have undoubtedly contributed to expanding the cultural field and increased opportunities for visibility, recognition, and competition. However, we should differentiate between "vitality" and "knowledge sustainability." An event may succeed spectacularly on its day, and an award may cast a bright light around a book, but the real question remains: Then what?
• What does Saudi literature lack to gain a broader presence in Arab and global critical studies?
•• We often talk as if the Saudi text is required to prove its merit while the flaw may lie in the "system of passage" that transfers the text from its locality to wider circles of reading; literature does not reach the world by itself, and between the writer and the distant reader is a series of liberation, criticism, translation, media, archiving, and databases that make the material accessible. We need to transition from merely introducing Saudi literature to producing questions from within it; major studies do not thrive on the phrase "we have good literature," but on comparable problems: the city and its transformations, the desert, oil and its social impact, the boom, family transformations, the relationship between the local and the global, language, place, identity, body, authority, memory. When Saudi literature produces its critical questions and finds someone to translate them intellectually, it will move from the category of "literature of a country that needs to be introduced" to a material that cannot be overlooked by researchers in modern Arabic literature. Take, for example, the experience of Raja Alem with her novel "The Dove's Necklace"; a novel deeply connected to Mecca, which won the Booker Prize in 2011, thus moving from the circle of local and Arab reading to a wider space of interest, and was subsequently translated into several languages. Here we see the "system of passage" in action: the text retained its Meccan essence, the award drew attention to it, and the translation carried it to another reader.
• How can cultural institutions support serious criticism while also maintaining the independence of the critic?
•• Independence simply means that the outcome of the reading is not part of a support contract. The institution can fund research, open the archive, give the researcher time, establish journals, support translation, and provide data, then withdraw its hand from the conclusion. I prefer to phrase the matter this way: the institution funds the conditions of knowledge, and does not buy its outcome.
• Is critical neutrality merely a theoretical assumption?
•• Complete neutrality is closer to an illusion; because the critic enters the text with their language, taste, formation, questions, and what they have read before. The concept I prefer is "regulated fairness," as objectivity in criticism is the discipline of the self by evidence.
• Excitement and literary battles, do we need to revive them today, or do we need to innovate new forms to invigorate this scene?
•• I am not interested in reviving literary battles in their old form, but I am interested in reviving what they used to do for the idea; for if an idea finds someone to oppose it, it is forced to reveal its premises and establish its argument. Many critical concepts were born from the womb of literary battles, and in my view, they do not die as long as the question remains, even if its field changes. This field has now moved to the digital platform, and algorithms have entered into the making of the battle, contributing to elevating one statement and lowering another, granting the quickest and most exciting phrase an opportunity that the careful argument does not have.
• Can social media turn into a serious critical space, or does its nature encourage quick judgments and polarization?
•• The problem with digital platforms lies in their shortening the distance between emotion and publication; in critical books, there is deliberation, in journalism there was an editor and a waiting time and a fixed page to refer back to. Today, however, the authority of the gate has shifted to the algorithm based on interaction, turning the most visible into the most "correct" in the public's consciousness. Nevertheless, it is unfair to deny the gains of the platforms; they have broken the monopoly of the podium and given distant voices the ability to appear and made the reader a party in the dialogue, and the latter should be studied carefully. I tend to believe that the future of digital criticism focuses on distributing functions: the platform raises the question and reveals it, the article builds the argument, and the research or book preserves memory and fulfills evidence.
• Which bothers you more: a mediocre writer who gains fame, or a talented writer who does not find anyone to pay attention to them?
•• The latter without hesitation; the famous mediocre writer annoys the taste, but time has harsh means of correcting fame lists. However, the talented writer who does not find an opportunity may be lost before they write what they were capable of writing, and the worst losses for culture are a good writer who never emerged.
• The creation of literary names through platforms and events, has it become a phenomenon, and what is its impact on the independence of critical taste?
•• The creation of names is not something new in literary and intellectual circles, even if its means have changed. The dominance of the name has a clear impact on reception and critical judgment. Do you not recall the story of Ibn Al-A'rabi with Abu Tammam, which summarizes the whole issue? Abu Amr Al-Tusi narrated that he read Ibn Al-A'rabi's poem by Abu Tammam as if it were by some poets of Hudhayl, and among it:
And a reproacher I reproached for their reproach
Thought I was ignorant of their ignorance.
When he finished it, Ibn Al-A'rabi said: Write this for me, then asked him: Is it good? He said: I have not heard anything better than it. When he informed him that it was by Abu Tammam, he said: "He is a genius, a genius."
What has changed is the name, and this is one of the most precise images of the authority of the name in criticism: the writer's text may precede it in the reader's mind, entering the text loaded with the history of its owner, its status, and the judgments that have settled about it. Today, platforms have doubled the capacity of this phenomenon; they can create a dense presence around the name before its achievement is sufficiently tested. Thus, the independence of taste means that the text remains capable of being praised even if we dislike its author, and to be weakened even if we love them.
