Four people were killed on Thursday while combating fires in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park on the Indonesian island of Java after being trapped by the flames, while two others sustained severe burns, according to the Indonesian Ministry of Forestry.
Authorities clarified that the victims were employees of the park and rangers, while a firefighter and a nearby hotel guard received treatment for burns they sustained while volunteering to help extinguish the fires.
The smoke from the fires spread to neighboring countries, causing severe air pollution in Southeast Asia, with Singapore recording the highest levels of air pollution globally on Friday morning, according to the "IQAir" website, with an index reading of 247, which is considered "very hazardous to health," followed by Kuala Lumpur in second place, while Jakarta ranked sixth.
Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong pledged to take legal action against companies found responsible for the fires, including exploring joint actions with other countries. Singaporean law allows for penalizing companies whose activities abroad cause unhealthy levels of smoke within Singapore.
Legal experts warned of the difficulties in pursuing responsible companies due to challenges in identifying the sources of the fires and sharing maps, along with inaccuracies in some land ownership records. Singapore had opened investigations in 2015 against four Indonesian companies suspected of being responsible for transboundary pollution, and the investigations are still ongoing.
The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry reported an increase in "hotspots" detected by satellites, which are areas that record unusually high temperatures without necessarily turning into actual fires. The pollution has led to school closures in the region and an increase in cases of respiratory disorders.
