Dr. Samir Suleiman, an Egyptian residing in the French city of Lyon, revealed to "Okaz" that there has been a rise in riots and vandalism in several French cities, coinciding with the imposition of a curfew from 9 PM to 6 AM. He pointed out that the unprecedented events the country is experiencing reflect the scale of the disturbances faced by the authorities.
Dr. Suleiman stated that the situation in Lyon seems better compared to Paris and Marseille; however, the city has witnessed acts of vandalism and looting affecting around 200 offices, shops, and commercial establishments, in addition to the burning of the tourism office in Place Bellecour in the city center, which is a historic building frequented by tourists seeking information about landmarks and tourist services.
Stolen Goods for Sale Online
He added that the looting was not limited to vandalism but extended to offering stolen goods for sale online, including products and bags from major brands, describing what is happening as an unusual scene in France, which he has not witnessed during his more than 35 years of living in Lyon.
He noted that the scale of the vandalism and the widening scope of the disturbances raise questions about the authorities' ability to contain the events and control their repercussions, affirming that what is happening represents an exceptional development compared to what he has been accustomed to during his decades of residence in the country.
Concerns About the Widening Disturbances
Dr. Suleiman pointed out that the announced measures are not limited, as he indicated, to the curfew but also include alerts regarding emergency procedures, amid ongoing tensions and increasing fears of the disturbances spreading.
These developments come amid security challenges facing French cities, while monitoring the official decisions issued by the authorities remains essential to determine the scope of the curfew, the cities included, and the nature of the exceptional measures being implemented.
Escalating Tensions in French Cities
These events come at a time when France is facing increasing security challenges with the escalation of riots and vandalism in several cities, amid fears of the disturbances spreading and affecting public and private properties and commercial activities. The scenes of burning establishments and looting shops bring back questions about the authorities' ability to contain the tensions and restore stability to the streets.
In light of the announced security measures, determining the scope and duration of the curfew, along with the exceptional measures that the authorities may take, remains a key factor in assessing the developments of the situation in the coming period.
