A recent study by researchers from King Saud University revealed a 78.1% increase in the number of doctors in the facilities of the Ministry of Health, while the number of doctors per 10,000 population rose by 56.1%, indicating that the growth of medical personnel has outpaced population growth during the studied period.

The study, published in the journal "Healthcare" on September 16, 2026, showed a 5.8% increase in the number of Ministry of Health hospitals, a 12.1% increase in beds, and a 20.5% increase in nursing staff, reviewing the development of health capabilities and the use of services recorded in the 13 regions of the Kingdom. Researchers Abdullah bin Salama and Nora Al-Amro relied on data from the annual statistical books of the Ministry of Health to analyze eight indicators related to facilities, personnel, and health services during the period from 2016 to 2024, studying the total numbers and rates associated with population size, and comparing their trends across regions.

The results indicated a 5.6% increase in the number of nursing staff per 10,000 population, along with a 15.6% growth in outpatient clinic visits and a 60.4% increase in recorded hospitalization cases during the same period.

The study clarified that health indicators have taken varying paths at both the national and regional levels, allowing for their use in determining priorities for follow-up and planning, as well as understanding changes in available capabilities and the volume of service utilization. The researchers emphasized that the study is descriptive, and its results do not alone prove the causes of the observed changes or the improvement in the quality of care and accessibility; evaluating these aspects requires additional indicators and research. The results are limited to the indicators of the Ministry of Health addressed in the study and do not represent an exhaustive account of all health service providers in the Kingdom, while its data covers the period ending in 2024.
