Researchers have developed a new artificial intelligence model capable of analyzing a single facial image and estimating survival risks for cancer patients, in a technology that may help doctors in the future assess a patient's health status before making intensive treatment decisions.

Researchers at "Mass General Brigham" in the U.S. developed the "FAHR-Face" model after training it on over 40 million facial images, before using it to develop two separate tools; one for estimating biological age and the other for predicting survival risks in cancer patients.

More than 34,000 images of cancer patients

The "FAHR-FaceSurvival" tool was trained more specifically on over 34,000 images of cancer patients before being tested on independent patient groups to verify its ability to detect survival-related indicators.

The results showed that the higher risk scores assigned by the model were associated with shorter survival periods, even after taking other clinical factors into account.

What does AI see in the face?

Researchers found that the model does not rely on the face in the same way that the age estimation tool does, as "FAHR-FaceSurvival" focuses more on areas below the eyes and around the bridge of the nose.

The researchers suggest that these areas may carry signals related to cachexia or physical changes associated with illness, but they emphasized that the precise mechanism the model relies on to make its predictions still requires further study.

Not a substitute for the doctor

The researchers confirmed that the technology is designed to support doctors' decisions and not to replace clinical assessment, especially when estimating a patient's ability to tolerate intensive treatments such as surgery, radiation therapy, or systemic therapies.

They also stressed the need for additional testing on more diverse population groups before using the model routinely in hospitals, while studying the potential biases related to age, race, or image quality.

The study's results were published in "The Lancet Digital Health," while researchers believe that facial images could potentially become a low-cost source of health indicators that assist in tailoring treatment and monitoring patients in the future.
