On our National Day, how do we explain to our children the greatness of what King Abdulaziz accomplished?

“The kingdom is for God, then for Abdulaziz.”

This call echoed in Riyadh, but its impact extended across the Arabian Peninsula, heralding a new era.

It was on the morning of the fifth of Shawwal, 1319 AH, corresponding to January 15, 1902, when King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud recaptured Riyadh. From that moment, the journey of unification and the epic of foundation began, lasting three decades until the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was declared in 1932.

On the unified land, a single sovereign state was established, followed by institutional and economic development, allowing the Kingdom to transition from the epic of foundation to state-building.

We can tell our children about the land he unified, the state he established, and the institutions he built; but there remains a question that the map does not answer: What made this structure capable of enduring and growing after its founder, generation after generation?

The answer takes us to what does not appear on the map: King Abdulaziz built a state whose impact transcends the time of its founder, and he planted a homeland that is rooted in people as much as it extends across the land.

The land is measured by its area, the state by its age, and the homeland by the depth of its roots in its people.

The unification of the land, the establishment of sovereignty, and the building of institutions; three dimensions that illustrate how the state was established. But to understand what made it endure and grow, two other dimensions must be considered that a map cannot define:

Time... and humanity.

The fourth dimension... time

If the map tells our children where King Abdulaziz reached, then time tells them how far what he built has come.

Three decades of unification reveal that time for King Abdulaziz was not a race, but rather a part of the decision; the tools changed with the phase, from unification and reconciliation to treaties, administration, and institution-building. Even the name of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia came as a culmination of the unification journey, not at its beginning.

In the order of events, there is something more significant: the state preceded wealth. The Kingdom was declared and its sovereignty established before the signing of the oil concession with "Standard Oil of California" in May 1933, and years before oil appeared commercially. Wealth did not create the state of King Abdulaziz; rather, wealth came to a state that had already been established.

But the greatest test of the temporal dimension began at the moment that no founder can witness the results: after his departure.

King Abdulaziz passed away in 1953, but his project did not die. Power transitioned, generations succeeded one another, and the economy, society, and institutions changed, without the Kingdom needing to start anew with each new era.

Here lies the difference between a leader whose project is tied to his lifetime, and a founder who builds a state that can live on after him.

Evidence of this foundation includes the establishment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1930 and the appointment of Prince Faisal bin Abdulaziz as its minister; it was the first ministry in the state. This helps to understand part of the secret of continuity: that the functions of the state transform into institutional responsibilities passed down through generations, accumulating experience instead of starting anew with each generation.

King Abdulaziz did not leave behind a stagnant state that preserves the shape of his time, but rather a solid foundation that allows each generation to build for its own time. Here, the age of the state is not merely the number of years that have passed, but its ability to produce a new future in every generation.

Perhaps this is why King Abdulaziz's greatest victories in the temporal dimension are victories that did not stop at his time; achievements that continue to unfold, generation after generation, in all that the Kingdom adds to what he built.

And this is one of the most difficult equations for states:

To remain the state itself... without remaining as it was.

But the state does not traverse time solely through its institutions; it is carried by humanity.

The fifth dimension... humanity

And humanity here is not just a number in the population count, but the place where the homeland lives when the map is absent.

This dimension does not require me to search for it solely in documents; I have grown up hearing in the councils of my ancestors, who lived and worked with King Abdulaziz and then with his sons, stories that have remained in memory and passed down through generations. Not all of them were about politics and decisions; many were about human moments, open councils, and relationships built on closeness, trust, and loyalty that remained after their owners.

As the years passed, I realized that those small stories explained something larger: how the homeland is rooted in humanity.

King Abdulaziz did not unify a homogeneous society; he brought together under one state regions, cities, tribes, and settlements, each with its own history, uniqueness, and memory. While force could unify geography, it alone cannot create belonging.

Here lies the precision of the construction: the establishment of the homeland was not conditional upon erasing smaller affiliations, but rather on encompassing them within a larger belonging. The regions retained their uniqueness, the tribes their lineages, and the cities their memories, while an even broader circle named the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia grew above them all.

This is the difference between gathering people within one border and making those borders live within them.

Moreover, the human dimension in King Abdulaziz's project extends beyond the borders of the Kingdom; the state he unified embraces Mecca, the qibla of Muslims, and Medina and the Mosque of the Messenger of God ﷺ. Here, geography becomes larger than its political boundaries: a homeland that is rooted in its people, and two sacred places that are deeply embedded in the consciousness of a nation.

King Abdulaziz established meaning before the title came; he made the care of the two holy mosques and the service and security of pilgrims among the responsibilities of the state, and then his sons, the kings, carried this trust, until its meaning became a title for the king himself in the title of "Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques," which is now held by King Salman bin Abdulaziz. If the leader of this country is the servant of the two holy mosques, then for the Saudi citizen, this carries both honor and responsibility; to be among the people of a homeland that bears the trust of the qibla of Muslims and the service of the guests of the Merciful.

With security, justice, administration, education, roads, and common interests, the state did not only expand on the land; it also expanded within the life of humanity. Then time did its part, transforming the experiences of the fathers into the memories of the children, and the memories of the children into the belonging of the grandchildren.

Perhaps the councils of our ancestors that preserved those stories were not just a memory of the past; they were a small witness to the way the homeland transferred from generation to generation.

Thus, the homeland is not measured by the number of those who live within it, but by the depth of its roots in them.

When time met humanity

Time alone may make a state old, but it does not necessarily make it established. Belonging, no matter how deep, requires time to transform into a memory that is inherited by generations.

In the Kingdom, each strengthened the other: the longer the life of the state, the deeper the belonging of the people to it, and the deeper the belonging, the greater its ability to transcend time.

Here, the epic of King Abdulaziz can be summarized in three extensions: he unified the land to create the state, extended the state in time to endure, and extended it in humanity to become a homeland.

The first we see on the map.

The second we see in the age of the Kingdom.

As for the third... we see it within us.

The School of King Abdulaziz

Perhaps the strongest affirmation of the success of the model is that King Abdulaziz's experience did not end with his departure, but rather transformed into a school of governance.

His sons, the kings, succeeded one another, each with their own time and challenges, and the continuity of the school was not in repeating what the founder did, but in carrying his logic into their times: stability in the essence, flexibility in movement, and readiness for the coming time.

Thus, the Kingdom transitioned from foundation to institutions, from limited resources to development, and from the challenge of unifying the land to the challenges of economy, knowledge, and technology. The tools and priorities changed, but the chain of the state did not break; each generation took over the construction, added to it, and then handed it over to the next.

With the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, this chain connects directly to the founder; a son of King Abdulaziz who carries the memory of the foundation, decades of experience in state-building, and support for his brothers, the kings, in different stages; he witnessed the challenges of their eras and participated in state affairs and addressing many of its issues before leading the Kingdom into a new era.

With Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the equation moves toward the future with the tools of a new generation; Saudi Vision 2030 includes diversifying the economy, enhancing national and Islamic identity, and developing human capabilities among its goals and programs.

Here, the School of King Abdulaziz appears in its clearest form: it was not about having his sons preserve the shape of what he built, but about having them preserve its capacity for growth.

From the founder to the present of the Kingdom, times and tools change, and the question remains:

How do we change enough to create the future, while remaining rooted enough to know who we are?

A legacy from generation to generation

That is why I say to our children: Our generation inherited the Kingdom from those who preceded us, and there will come a day when we will hand it over to your generation. Between receiving and handing over is a responsibility greater than celebrating what we have inherited: to know its value and to build upon it.

Homelands are not inherited by a generation to consume what was built by the previous one, but to add to it. The generation that deserves what it inherits is the generation that builds upon it... not the one that squanders it.

You may not be from the generation that witnessed King Abdulaziz, nor from the generation that was aware of the councils of those who lived with him and worked alongside him. But you live in a state that he laid the foundation for, on a land he unified, and in a homeland that contributed to shaping its identity and belonging. King Abdulaziz is not just a figure from the past for today's generation; they live in the legacy of what he created.

And the means of shaping awareness will change; from newspapers and radio to satellite channels, then social media platforms, and today to an era where artificial intelligence can create words, sounds, and images. But the danger remains the same: to leave others the task of defining our homeland to our children.

Therefore, know your homeland before an algorithm defines it for you. Read its history, and know its achievements and challenges; for he who knows its story is better able to scrutinize stereotypes and campaigns of distortion rather than receiving them as they are.

And the strongest response to those who doubt your homeland is not to argue, but to be a part of its success: through your knowledge, your work, your awareness, your production, and your preservation of its unity; for when you participate in building your homeland, its success becomes part of your success, and defending it is defending what you contributed to creating.

States have their experiences in governance, and the Kingdom has its experience that grew from its history; the pledge of allegiance has deep roots in the Saudi experience since the 18th century, and it evolved with the state until it became part of its contemporary governance system. Here, the pledge of allegiance encapsulates both dimensions together: a time that solidified it, and a humanity that carried its meaning from generation to generation.

Thus, loyalty to the homeland is not completed with a word we say on its day; it is knowledge that preserves memory, unity that protects society, and work that builds the future.

And here the two dimensions return for the last time: the impact of King Abdulaziz was able to reach us through time; because the state he founded continued, and the homeland he helped build took root in humanity.

We have inherited a unified land, a solid governance that the founder's sons have carried as a trust from generation to generation, a pledge and loyalty whose roots extend in the history of the Saudi state, a strong state, and a deeply rooted homeland. It is our responsibility to leave a Kingdom for those who come after us that is stronger than the one we received.

If the generations of the Kingdom understand this equation, the question will not be how many years this state can endure, but:

How many new centuries can it create?

And that, perhaps, is the most beautiful answer to the question we started with: What do we say to our children about King Abdulaziz on our National Day?

We tell them: Perhaps you have not seen King Abdulaziz... but you live in what he created.
