The song "Ala Rawd Al-Habib" by the Syrian artist Assala has entered the realm of controversy regarding the rights and origins of melodies, after it was announced that its melody is attributed to Syrian heritage, specifically to the city of Latakia.

In a new development in the case, the Egyptian Association of Authors, Composers, and Publishers "Sasiro" issued a statement addressing the origin of the melody, relying on a musical analysis conducted by specialists within the association, and found a clear similarity between Assala's song and "Zoroni Kol Sana Marra" by Sayed Darwish.

Musical Analysis Raises Questions

According to the association, the resemblance is not limited to a single musical phrase or segment, but extends to several elements that form the basic structure of the melody, including the melodic line, the rhythmic and temporal patterns, the modal framework, and the way musical phrases are interconnected.

Sasiro pointed out that some differences and alterations appeared in the way the melody was crafted, yet it believes that the fundamental features remain clear when comparing the two works.

Why Syrian Heritage?

The association placed the issue of attributing the melody to Syrian heritage at the forefront of its inquiries, demanding clarification on the reference that this classification is based upon.

It clarified that the melody had previously appeared in artistic works presented by several singers, including Syrian artists, and had also been attributed to contemporary composers in earlier periods, before another narrative emerged that considers it part of Syrian heritage.

The association emphasized that this multiplicity in the attribution of the melody makes it necessary to rely on a documented historical source before determining its artistic identity.

Fairuz's Recording Dates Back to 1955

Sasiro cited the recording of the song "Zoroni Kol Sana Marra" by the artist Fairuz in 1955, noting that the work was then attributed to Sayed Darwish.

The association believes that this artistic documentation predates the current debate regarding the attribution of the melody to Syrian heritage by a significant period, which makes researching historical sources and recordings, from its perspective, essential to reach an accurate conclusion.

One Document Could Resolve the Controversy

To resolve the dispute over the origin of the melody, the association called upon anyone who has a documented recording of the melody in its currently circulated form dating back to before 1917 to present it, as it could serve as historical evidence that may help determine its source.

At the same time, Sasiro clarified that its position is not only related to Sayed Darwish's membership in the association but also to what it considers a responsibility to protect Egyptian musical composition and ensure that works are attributed to their rightful owners.

Sasiro: We Respect Syrian Heritage

In concluding its position, the association affirmed its respect for Syrian musical heritage, stressing that raising the issue is not intended to diminish its value or question its authenticity.

It explained that its goal, according to its statement, is to reach the truth about the origin of the melody through musical comparison and historical documents, away from narratives unsupported by reliable sources.

It also emphasized that its defense of Sayed Darwish's legacy is part of preserving Egyptian musical memory and ensuring that artistic works are attributed to their rightful owners based on what is proven by evidence and documentation.
