A mission from the Supreme Council of Antiquities has revealed a pyramid-shaped tomb made of mud bricks, dating back to the Roman era, during excavation work in the archaeological area of Bir al-Shaghala in the Dakhla Oasis in the New Valley Governorate.
According to the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, the tomb was designated for the burial of a man and his wife, and it features an unusual architectural design, along with inscriptions and funerary texts that provide information about religious and funerary practices in the oases during that period.
The excavation work resulted in the discovery of a collection of archaeological finds, including a stone slab bearing a funerary lament in ancient Greek, an offering table, a purification basin made of sandstone, in addition to pottery vessels and a bronze coin bearing an inscription of the Roman Emperor Constantine.
Among the most notable discoveries is a funerary plaque mounted on the southern wall of the pyramid section, rectangular in shape and topped with a decorative design featuring a sun disk executed in relief carving.
The Bir al-Shaghala area is considered one of the important archaeological sites in the Dakhla Oasis, as it represents one of the cemeteries of the city of Mout, which was the capital of the oasis during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.
The Supreme Council of Antiquities indicated that the new discoveries contribute to shedding light on aspects of cultural and religious life and the funerary practices that prevailed in the region during the Roman era.
