فيما شكك الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب بالمستقبل السياسي لرئيس الوزراء الإسرائيلي بنيامين نتنياهو، أعلن حزب الليكود، اليوم (الأربعاء)، أن زعيمه سيخوض الانتخابات القادمة. وتوقع الحزب في بيان مقتضب، أن رئيس الوزراء سيفوز في الانتخابات.

جاء هذا التوضيح من الليكود للتأكيد على أن نتنياهو يعتزم التنافس في الانتخابات القادمة ردا على ما قاله ترمب في مقابلة مع قناة ABC نيوز.

ووصف الرئيس الأمريكي نتنياهو بأنه «رئيس وزراء في زمن الحرب»، ولكنه ترك علامة استفهام كبيرة حول مستقبله السياسي، قائلا: «إنه سؤال مفتوح عما إذا كان نتنياهو سيترشح لإعادة الانتخاب، وما إذا كان يريد الاستمرار أصلا».

في المقابل، أظهر استطلاع لـ«معهد إسرائيل الديمقراطية» أن 61% من الإسرائيليين يعتقدون أن نتنياهو يجب ألا يترشح في انتخابات الكنيست المرتقبة، فيما يرى 35% من الإسرائيليين أنه يجب عليه الترشح.

وتنتهي ولاية الكنيست الحالي في شهر أكتوبر القادم، ومن المتوقع إجراء الانتخابات في سبتمبر أو أكتوبر القادمين.

ومنذ أواخر ديسمبر 2022، يرأس نتنياهو البالغ من العمر 76 عاما الحكومة الراهنة، وهي توصف بأنها أكثر الحكومات يمينية منذ قيام إسرائيل عام 1948 على أراض فلسطينية محتلة.

يذكر أن نتنياهو يحاكم منذ عدة سنوات بتهم فساد تستوجب سجنه بحال إدانته، كما أنه مطلوب منذ 2024 للمثول أمام المحكمة الجنائية الدولية بتهمة ارتكاب جرائم حرب وأخرى ضد الإنسانية بقطاع غزة.

This clarification from Likud was made to confirm that Netanyahu intends to compete in the upcoming elections in response to what Trump said in an interview with ABC News.

The U.S. President described Netanyahu as a "wartime Prime Minister," but left a significant question mark over his political future, stating: "It is an open question whether Netanyahu will run for re-election, and whether he even wants to continue at all."

In contrast, a survey by the "Israel Democracy Institute" showed that 61% of Israelis believe Netanyahu should not run in the upcoming Knesset elections, while 35% of Israelis think he should run.

The current Knesset's term ends next October, and elections are expected to be held in September or October.

Since late December 2022, the 76-year-old Netanyahu has been leading the current government, which is described as the most right-wing government since the establishment of Israel in 1948 on occupied Palestinian territories.

It is worth noting that Netanyahu has been on trial for several years on corruption charges that could lead to imprisonment if he is convicted, and he has also been wanted since 2024 to appear before the International Criminal Court on charges of committing war crimes and other crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.
