In a striking paradox amid military tensions, crude oil exports from the Middle East surpassed pre-war levels during the last week of September, despite ongoing attacks on tankers and commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz and its surroundings.

Preliminary data from the ship-tracking company "Kpler" showed that crude exports ranged between 19.5 and 22.5 million barrels per day on September 24, and between September 27 and 29, compared to an average of about 18 million barrels per day during the period from March 2025 to February 2026, prior to the outbreak of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.

The average crude exports during the seven days ending on October 1 were about 18.5 million barrels per day, while the average shipments of crude, petroleum products, chemicals, and non-gaseous liquids reached 22.4 million barrels per day in the seven days ending on September 30.

The increase was not limited to crude oil, as liquefied natural gas shipments departing through the Strait of Hormuz during September recorded their highest monthly level since February, indicating that energy movement through the vital maritime corridor continues despite rising security risks.

These figures are particularly significant given the pivotal role of the Strait of Hormuz in the global energy market. Before the outbreak of war on February 28, maritime traffic through the strait included about 125 large commercial vessels daily, while the corridor transported nearly one-fifth of the world's daily supplies of crude oil and liquefied natural gas.

However, ship tracking data does not necessarily reflect the full scale of trade movement through the strait, as it does not include vessels that may have turned off their automatic identification systems to avoid detection, meaning that the actual shipping figures may differ from the observed data.

Conversely, the increase in oil flows through Hormuz does not indicate a reduction in security risks for tankers. The shipping information company "Marisks" reported that attacks on oil tankers and commercial ships in the strait and its vicinity continue, with at least seven incidents recorded.

One of the latest incidents involved the giant oil tanker "Kazma 3," which was struck by an unknown projectile on October 1, leading to a fire on board, although the crew members were not injured before being evacuated from the ship.

"Marisks" believes that the danger facing commercial vessels has become more volatile and difficult to predict, noting that some attacks may be linked to the presence of ships within specific conflict zones, where missiles or military systems can detect signals emitted by the vessels and track them.

These developments reveal a complex equation in the Strait of Hormuz: while shipping companies still face increasing military risks, this has not yet led to a widespread halt in energy exports, as tankers continue to traverse one of the world's most important maritime corridors.

The continued oil flows also reflect the strait's importance to both producers and consumers; any long-term disruption to its movement could quickly impact oil prices, shipping costs, and supply security in global markets, given that a large part of international energy trade relies on this corridor.

However, the continued passage does not mean that the crisis has ended, as the ability of tankers to pass safely remains linked to developments in the military confrontation and the extent of the attacks. Therefore, the increase in exports in recent days may represent a temporary continuation of trade under risks, rather than necessarily a definitive return to the pre-war normalcy.
