The United States has redeployed its B-1 strategic bombers stationed at the British base of "Fairford" back to American soil, following the detection of a security threat related to a potential plot to target the base and the American forces present there, in a development that reveals the sensitivity of the American military presence in Britain amid rising tensions with Iran.
The "Wall Street Journal" reported that American officials and the U.S. Department of Defense stated that Washington decided to withdraw the bombers after intelligence information emerged regarding a security plot that British authorities said they were investigating for a possible connection to Iran, while the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed the return of the bombers to their bases within the United States.
British authorities had detained several individuals near the "Fairford" base in late September as part of an investigation related to suspicion of planning a terrorist act. The investigations included the possibility of a connection to a foreign entity, before the case expanded with the emergence of indicators that the British government said supported the likelihood of Iranian involvement.
Earlier, British police announced that five British men aged between 23 and 25 were detained near the base, before being released on bail while investigations continued. Authorities later arrested a dual British-Iranian national in London on suspicion of preparing for terrorist acts, bringing the total number of detainees linked to the investigation to six.
Reports indicate that investigators are looking into the possibility that some individuals may have been recruited or directed to work for a foreign entity, while British authorities have not definitively announced the nature of the plot or the level of threat it posed to the base. According to the latest data, authorities did not find usable explosives in the vehicles that were searched, although a quantity of fuel was discovered.
The "Fairford" base holds special significance for the U.S. Air Force, as it is one of the prominent European sites capable of hosting and operating heavy bombers. Washington has used it in previous military operations in the Middle East, including the Gulf War in 1991 and the Iraq War in 2003.
The importance of the base has increased during the current military confrontation with Iran, as the United States has utilized it in operations related to the war, making it a potential target for Iranian threats. Tehran had previously warned that bases used to launch attacks on its territory could be considered legitimate targets for retaliation.
In contrast, Iran denies any involvement in the plot and described the accusations linking it to the incident as untrue, while British security agencies continue to investigate the possibility of Iranian involvement or the use of individuals working directly or indirectly on behalf of a foreign entity.
The decision to relocate the bombers comes at a time when Washington is trying to maintain the B-1's capability to conduct long-range missions from American territory, with the Pentagon confirming that the bombers that returned to the United States are still capable of executing global operations when needed, indicating that the move essentially represents a change in deployment location rather than the retirement of these aircraft or a reduction in their operational readiness.
Developments at "Fairford" indicate that the repercussions of the American-Iranian confrontation are no longer confined to the Middle East but are beginning to extend to facilities and forces associated with military operations in Europe, which poses an increasing security challenge for Britain to protect the bases used by American forces while investigations into the nature and source of the threat continue.
