The Russian authorities informed the World Health Organization today (Tuesday) that no cases of plague have been reported in the city of Irkutsk, located in Siberia, following the death of a worker at one of the plague research institutes in the city last week, an incident that raised questions about the cause of death and its possible connection to the disease.

No Plague in Irkutsk

Christian Lindmeier, a spokesperson for the World Health Organization, stated during a press conference in Geneva that the Russian authorities have officially confirmed to the organization that no cases of plague have been reported in Irkutsk.

The Russian response came in the context of an official request made by the World Health Organization to Moscow for information regarding the incident.

Investigations After the Death

The Russian authorities had previously informed the international organization that they are investigating the possibility that pneumonic plague was the cause of the laboratory worker's death, who was employed at a specialized plague research institute.

According to the World Health Organization, the Russian authorities confirmed that they have identified individuals who were in contact with the deceased, and reported that the results of tests conducted to detect dangerous infectious pathogens were "negative."

However, it was not immediately clear whether these tests included the deceased worker herself, and whether the results allowed the authorities to rule out plague infection as a cause of her death.

The Russian diplomatic mission to the United Nations in Geneva did not provide an immediate response to a request for comment on the details of the tests and investigations.

WHO: Limited Risk to the Population

The World Health Organization previously confirmed that the risk of plague spreading among the general population in the area appears to be low.

Plague is a serious infectious disease caused by the bacterium Yersinia pestis, which can be transmitted to humans under certain conditions, with pneumonic plague representing one of its most severe forms.

Russia, like other member states of the World Health Organization, is subject to the obligations outlined in the International Health Regulations, which require it to respond to the organization's requests regarding public health risks within a specified timeframe.

According to the data provided by the organization, the Russian authorities have so far confirmed that there are no recorded cases of plague in Irkutsk, while the assessment of the circumstances surrounding the laboratory worker's death and the related test results continues.
