The French authorities have recovered two valuable paintings by the famous French Impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, about a month after they were stolen in a swift operation that targeted the "Renoir" museum in the town of Cannes-sur-Mer on the French Riviera. Six people have been arrested in connection with the case, marking the latest development in the investigations that began following the theft in early September.

Recovery of the Paintings

The mayor of Cannes-sur-Mer, Brian Masson, announced the recovery of the paintings "Portrait of Madame Colonna Romano" and "Young Woman at the Well," which belong to the Musée d'Orsay in Paris and were on loan to the Renoir museum at the time of the theft. He described their recovery as a significant relief for the town and its residents.

Authorities have not yet disclosed the location where the paintings were found or the details of the operation that led to their recovery.

Break-in at Dawn

The details of the case date back to the dawn of September 8, 2026, when two thieves managed to breach the fence surrounding the museum and enter its gardens before breaking into the building through a window and targeting several of Renoir's most notable works displayed inside.

According to the French Ministry of Culture, the museum's alarm was triggered at 5:48 AM, while the municipal police arrived at the scene at 5:53.

The two thieves targeted four paintings during the operation and managed to detach them from their display locations. However, the arrival of the police and the activation of alarm systems forced them to flee quickly, leaving two paintings in the vicinity of the museum's garden: "Portrait of Madame Stephen Pichon" and "Coco Reading," while they successfully escaped with the other two paintings, which remained missing until their recent recovery.

Less than 3 Minutes

Authorities revealed that the entire break-in and theft took less than three minutes, and that the perpetrators targeted works considered among the most valuable in the museum before investigators launched a wide search operation to identify the involved parties and track the stolen paintings.

DNA Leads to Suspects

Investigations have shown significant progress in recent days, as authorities arrested several suspects in simultaneous security operations in different areas of France, including two individuals suspected of being the main perpetrators of the break-in.

Information published by French media indicated that DNA traces found on belongings left at the crime scene helped investigators identify several suspects, with the total number of people linked to the investigation reaching six.

The judicial authorities are still withholding details about the location where the paintings were hidden and the method by which investigators managed to reach them, as the investigation continues to determine the role of each suspect and whether other individuals participated in planning the theft or attempting to deal with the artworks.

The mayor of the city canceled a press conference that was scheduled to reveal more information, to avoid affecting the progress of the investigation.

Works of Historical Value

The case gains additional significance considering the location of the theft, as the "Renoir" museum is situated in the house that was the last residence of the French artist, and its collection includes works and artifacts related to his life and career.

Moreover, the four targeted paintings had been on loan to the museum from the Musée d'Orsay since 1995, with three of them classified under "national museums for recovery," a French classification for cultural works that were recovered after World War II and whose original owners have not been identified.

Enhancing Museum Security

The theft has brought renewed attention in France to the protection measures for museums and art collections, as the Ministry of Culture indicated after the incident the need to strengthen security measures in cultural institutions, confirming that a national museum security plan has been allocated a fund of 30 million euros, including hundreds of priority projects to enhance the protection of cultural sites and artifacts.
