Amid rising tensions and ongoing diplomatic stalemate, North Korea launched several ballistic missiles today (Monday) towards its eastern waters.

The spokesperson for the South Korean military, Jang Do-young, announced that missiles of various types were launched from an area surrounding the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, where the country's main airport has become a key site for missile launches in recent years, according to the Associated Press.

For its part, the Japanese Ministry of Defense reported detecting at least two missiles, noting that they fell into waters outside Japan's exclusive economic zone. The Japanese Prime Minister's office confirmed that no damage was reported.

It was mentioned that one of the missiles traveled more than 900 kilometers before falling into the sea, without providing details about the trajectories of the other missiles or specifying the total number of missiles detected.

These developments come at a time when North Korea is intensifying its military tests aimed at expanding its arsenal of weapons capable of carrying nuclear warheads, while continuing to adopt a hardline stance towards Seoul.

The launch of these missiles followed days after South Korea tested a domestically produced hypersonic weapon on Friday, designed to fly at speeds of at least five times the speed of sound, with the capability to bypass missile defense systems.

Tensions have escalated along the heavily fortified border between the two Koreas after Seoul reported that a mine, originating from North Korea, injured its soldiers, while Pyongyang denied responsibility for the incident.

South Korean Defense Minister Kang Shin-chul informed a parliamentary committee that the mines were apparently planted by North Korea as part of fortification efforts along the border near the military demarcation line that divides the demilitarized zone between the two Koreas, according to Bloomberg.

He confirmed that the responsibility lies with North Korea, and thus appropriate measures will be taken, noting that the military has options for a response that will be implemented in stages, without disclosing details. He expressed Seoul's readiness to engage in direct dialogue with Pyongyang regarding the incident, stating: "We will strongly urge them to sit at the negotiating table so that we can reach the truth together." He pointed out that the investigation aims to determine whether North Korea planted the mines knowing that South Korean forces might enter the area and be harmed.
