The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva, warned of the repercussions of the recent attacks on Saudi Arabia, emphasizing that the effects of escalation in the region could extend to the global economy, amid rising energy costs and increasing geopolitical risks.

Georgieva stated during a press conference on the sidelines of the annual meetings of the IMF and the World Bank in Bangkok on Wednesday that the Saudi economy is important for the region and the world, warning that recent developments could have "negative consequences for everyone everywhere."

These warnings gain significance in light of the pivotal role of the Middle East in global energy supplies, as an escalation or targeting of vital facilities could lead to increased volatility in oil prices and higher shipping and insurance costs, which would reflect on inflation and growth rates, especially in energy-importing countries and developing economies.

This coincides with a military escalation in Yemen, where the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, confirmed the continuation of the "Yemen Dawn" operation to end the Houthi coup and restore state institutions, while government forces announced the execution of about 2,200 targeting operations against the group.

In contrast, the Houthis announced that Sana'a and nine Yemeni governorates were subjected to 104 airstrikes and missile attacks within 24 hours, threatening to target vital facilities in Saudi Arabia. Al-Alimi condemned the attacks on the Kingdom, appreciating its support for Yemen and its institutions.

These developments raise concerns about the security of the region and strategic maritime corridors, foremost among them the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which represents one of the important routes for global trade, as the widening of unrest could lead to increased costs of transporting goods and energy, deepening pressures on markets and supply chains.

In a broader context, Georgieva warned that the rapid advancement in artificial intelligence and global economic changes could widen the gap between advanced and developing economies, especially with the sharp decline in development aid.

She called on member countries to fulfill their commitments and increase funding allocated to the Growth and Poverty Reduction Trust Fund, which provides concessional loans to low-income countries, emphasizing the importance of enabling these countries to access the necessary funding to face crises and support their economies.
