Texas has become a hotbed in the midterm elections, with fierce competition for a Senate seat in a race that has exceeded half a billion dollars in spending, amid Republican fears of the growing chances for Democrats to regain control of Congress.

According to the New York Times, the competition is gaining exceptional importance, as no Democrat has won a statewide election in over three decades, while polls show a slight lead for Democratic candidate James Talarico over his Republican opponent Ken Paxton, in a contest that could become the most expensive non-presidential election in U.S. history.

Talarico, 37, is running with a message aimed at attracting undecided voters, relying on his religious background and his record of bipartisan cooperation, along with promises to lower taxes for the middle class, cap interest rates on credit cards, and help Americans achieve home ownership.

In contrast, Paxton and his allies are launching attacks on his opponent's positions, trying to portray him as extreme, while Talarico's nine-day absence from the campaign, citing a severe cold, sparked a wave of rumors about his presence in a mental health facility in Ohio. However, surveillance camera footage showed that he spent that time at home, debunking those claims.

Paxton's record is not without controversy; he faced criminal fraud charges that ended in a deal to drop them in exchange for restitution and community service, and former aides have accused him of bribery and abuse of power. The state House voted in 2023 to impeach and remove him, before the Senate acquitted him. His personal problems increased after his wife filed for divorce last year, following revelations of an affair during his impeachment proceedings.

The Texas battle reflects the stakes of the partisan wager on the midterm elections, as Democrats seek to capitalize on the decline in Republican popularity in some areas, while the Trump camp tries to maintain a stronghold that has been Republican for decades, in a race intertwined with massive money, political attacks, scandals, and misinformation.
