The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Nabil Fahmy, during his first official visit to Lebanon since taking office, discussed with senior Lebanese officials ways to enhance Arab support for Beirut, amid ongoing Israeli assaults and the security and economic challenges facing the country.

Today (Monday), Fahmy held meetings with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, Speaker of the House Nabih Berri, and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, addressing the developments in the internal and regional situations, ways to support Lebanese state institutions, and enhance its sovereignty over all its territories, alongside mobilizing Arab support for economic recovery and reconstruction efforts.

During his meeting with Aoun at Baabda Palace, Fahmy affirmed the Arab League's commitment to supporting the Lebanese state and its national institutions, respecting Lebanon's sovereignty, and not infringing on its territorial integrity, emphasizing the League's readiness to intensify political and diplomatic movements and communications with Arab and international parties to support Lebanon and its just causes.

The Secretary-General announced his intention to visit southern Lebanon to assess the situation on the ground, confirming that security and stability in the south are a priority for the Arab League, amid ongoing Israeli violations and the challenges they impose on the population and state institutions.

For his part, Aoun stressed Lebanon's commitment to a diplomatic solution, despite its difficulties, considering its cost to be much lower than that of war, and pointing to the ongoing Israeli violations in southern Lebanon.

In his meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri, Fahmy discussed the developments in the political and security landscape and their implications for internal stability, emphasizing the importance of supporting constitutional institutions and enhancing their capacity to fulfill their responsibilities, which preserves national unity and strengthens the Lebanese state's presence in facing current challenges.

The meeting also addressed the necessity of continuing coordination between the Arab League and Lebanese leaderships, supporting the country's sovereignty, rejecting Israeli assaults, and working towards ending the Israeli occupation of Lebanese territories.

Full Support for Establishing the Authority of the Lebanese State

During his meeting with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, Fahmy focused on the priorities for the upcoming phase, foremost among them strengthening the authority of the state and asserting its sovereignty over all Lebanese territories, supporting national institutions, and mobilizing Arab support for recovery and reconstruction efforts.

The Secretary-General emphasized the importance of continuing coordination with the Lebanese government to face economic and security challenges, contributing to restoring stability, improving living conditions, and creating the necessary conditions for the return of displaced persons to their areas.

The three meetings reflect the Arab League's efforts to enhance direct communication with Lebanese governance institutions and affirm its presence in efforts aimed at protecting the country's stability and supporting its political and diplomatic choices.

Southern Lebanon and Resolution 1701 at the Core of Arab Movements

The visit gains special importance amid ongoing tension on the Lebanese-Israeli border, the human losses and extensive damage resulting from confrontations, as well as the challenges related to the reconstruction of affected areas and restoring normal life there.

UN Security Council Resolution 1701, issued in August 2006 to end the war at that time, stands out as one of the main international frameworks for addressing the security situation in southern Lebanon, calling for a cessation of hostilities, enhancing the deployment of the Lebanese army and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and respecting the Blue Line, Lebanon's sovereignty, and the integrity of its territory.

The implementation of the resolution returned to the forefront of international efforts following the ceasefire agreement between Lebanon and Israel in November 2024, amid international calls for both parties to adhere to its provisions and address outstanding issues through diplomatic channels.

The challenge facing Lebanon is not limited to stopping assaults and restoring security in the south, but extends to strengthening state institutions, providing the necessary resources for reconstruction, and addressing the repercussions of the economic crisis that has weakened the country's ability to meet the needs of its population.

In this context, the Arab League places Lebanon's support before a test that requires transforming declared political positions into diplomatic movements and practical Arab support, which helps the Lebanese state regain stability, preserve its sovereignty, and enhance its ability to face challenges.
