With a broad smile and a giant yellow banana in his hand, Phil Foden appeared before the cameras after scoring in the 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town on Saturday, in a scene that seemed more comedic than football-related. However, the banana that stole the spotlight carries a story older than Manchester City's wealth and modern glory, and it returns today with a financial storm threatening the club's legacy.

The story began in 1987, when fan Frank Newton brought an inflatable banana to a match for his team against Plymouth, after borrowing it from his friend Alan Busby. The idea was a passing joke before it turned into a fan tradition. When the stands chanted for the inclusion of striker Emre Varadi, Newton raised his banana, transforming the chants into "Emre the Banana," a nickname that stuck with the player.

The phenomenon quickly spread in the late 1980s, expanding beyond bananas to dinosaurs, monsters, and giant toys. It peaked in December 1988, when around 12,000 City fans traveled to Stoke City's stadium, disguised and carrying their inflatable toys. Even the players entered the pitch holding bananas, but the celebration ended in a 1-3 loss.

After nearly four decades, the banana returns to the stands with the announcement of the independent committee's findings of financial violations against the club, while City maintains its innocence and appeals the decision. Instead of merely expressing anger, their fans chose mockery and defiance, with coach Enzo Maresca even encouraging them to bring more, and his four children joining in the excitement.

Thus, City fans reclaim their old weapon in a different time, a banana that started as a joke during tough days and has returned as a symbol of mockery in a crisis threatening one of England's biggest clubs.
