Thousands of tourists and visitors lined up in front of the Abu Simbel temple south of Aswan to witness the phenomenon of the sun aligning with the statue of King Ramses II, in a scene that combines astronomical wonder with the grandeur of ancient Egyptian architecture, transforming the archaeological city into a global tourist destination twice a year.
The area around the temple saw visitors from various nationalities flocking in, with queues stretching in front of the entrance gates since the early hours of the morning, as attendees were keen to reach the Holy of Holies to watch the sunlight streaming into the depths of the temple and illuminating its statues, capturing the moment that lovers of ancient Egyptian civilization eagerly await.
This influx coincides with the annual celebrations of the phenomenon, which is considered one of the most prominent archaeological and astronomical events in Egypt, contributing to the revitalization of tourism in Abu Simbel and Aswan Governorate.

A Celestial Phenomenon Occurring Twice a Year
The phenomenon of the sun aligning occurs in the temple of Ramses II on October 22 and February 22 each year, when the sun's rays penetrate the temple's entrance and corridors for nearly 60 meters, reaching the Holy of Holies, where the statues of Ramses II and the gods Amun-Ra and Ra-Horakhty are illuminated, while the statue of the god Ptah remains in the shadow.
The phenomenon lasts about 20 minutes, revealing the precision of the temple's design and the ancient Egyptians' ability to utilize their knowledge of astronomy and engineering in constructing their religious edifices, allowing light to reach a specific spot at nearly fixed times each year.
The event is not limited to its visual value; it is also linked to the temple's design and Ramses II's religious and political significance, providing an example of the interplay between architecture, religious belief, and astronomical knowledge in ancient Egypt.

A Temple That Survived Submersion to Continue to Dazzle the World
The phenomenon gains additional importance because the Abu Simbel temples survived submersion under the waters of Lake Nasser following the construction of the High Dam. In the 1960s, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) launched an international campaign to save the Nubian monuments threatened by flooding, during which the two temples were cut into massive blocks and relocated to a higher site, then reassembled.
Despite the complex relocation process, the sun's alignment continued to occur at the annual times, allowing the temple to remain a witness to two different civilizational achievements: the ingenuity of the ancient Egyptians in its design and the international cooperation that contributed to its rescue and preservation for future generations.
As visitors flock to witness the phenomenon, Abu Simbel's status on the cultural tourism map of Egypt is renewed, as it is a site that combines history, archaeology, and science, offering visitors the chance to witness a unique scene where the movement of the sun intersects with the secrets of ancient Egyptian architecture.
