The Taiwanese authorities issued a land warning today (Thursday) as the powerful Typhoon "Chami" approaches the island, announcing the cancellation of more than 100 flights amid expectations that the storm will pass near Taiwan's northeastern coast before gradually weakening as it moves northward.
Despite a slight decrease in the typhoon's strength, after being classified earlier as a super typhoon and one of the strongest storms to hit the Pacific this year, it is still accompanied by gusts of wind exceeding 227 kilometers per hour near its center, according to Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau.
The bureau indicated that the center of the typhoon is located about 520 kilometers southeast of the southern tip of the island, noting that the expected path of the storm will lead it along northeastern Taiwan before heading north towards the Chinese coast, and then continuing its course towards southern Japan.
It added that the typhoon's range has slightly expanded to about 320 kilometers, making it capable of affecting most parts of Taiwan, while meteorological experts warned of the possibility of its impacts lasting for nearly two days.
Warnings of waves exceeding 6 meters and heavy rainfall
The Taiwanese President, Lai Ching-te, urged citizens to prepare early for the typhoon's arrival and advised them to avoid heading to mountainous areas and coastlines due to the risks associated with strong winds, heavy rains, and rising waves.
The Taiwanese president stated in a post on his Facebook page that "a little more preparation means less risk," in a call to take necessary precautions before the storm reaches the island's closest point.
The authorities sent alerts via mobile phones to several coastal towns warning of waves that could exceed 6 meters, or about 20 feet, and also predicted rainfall amounts that could approach one meter in the northern mountainous areas, including the highlands near the capital Taipei.
Typhoon "Chami" is expected to reach its closest point to Taiwan late on (Friday), along the northeastern coast, before heading north towards the waters off the city of Shanghai, China.
East Asia typically experiences notable typhoon activity during the summer months, but these storms can also strike the region during the fall, accompanied by strong winds and heavy rainfall.
Cancellations of flights in Taiwan and Japan
Regarding transportation, the Taiwanese Ministry of Transportation announced the cancellation of 125 flights (Thursday), most of which are domestic flights, as part of the preparations to deal with the typhoon's impacts.
In contrast, the Taiwan railway network reported no disruptions at the time of the report, and the Ministry of the Interior stated that there were no reports of evacuations from threatened areas.
The measures taken indicate the Taiwanese authorities' readiness to deal with tropical storms, as the island has extensive experience in facing typhoons, which usually helps reduce human losses.
The typhoon is heading towards Japan and disrupting travel
The impacts of "Chami" are not limited to Taiwan, as forecasts indicate it will pass over Yonaguni Island, located in the far west of Japan and inhabited, within Okinawa Prefecture.
In Japan, major airlines, including Japan Airlines (JAL), All Nippon Airways (ANA), and Skymark Airlines, announced the cancellation of more than 100 flights, most of which are domestic, during the period from (Thursday) to (Sunday).
These cancellations are expected to affect the travel plans of more than 11,000 passengers, amid anticipation of the typhoon's path and its impact on air travel and coastal areas.
