شهد اللقاء في بدايته سيطرة أهلاوية وكاد أن يحرز الهدف الأول بعد تسديدة زياد الجهني التي ارتطمت بالقائم، وتمكن صن داونز من التقدم بالنتيجة عند الدقيقة 17 بعد كرة عرضية من موكوينا حولها نونو سانتوس برأسه إلى داخل المرمى كهدف أول للفريق الجنوب أفريقي.

ولم ينتظر الأهلي طويلاً من أجل الرد، إذ تمكن من الرد سريعاً وإدراك التعادل بعد أن نجح فراس البريكان في استغلال عرضية إيفان توني ليحولها البريكان للمرمى وتصطدم بالحارس الجنوب أفريقي رونوين ويليامز وتسكن شباكه بالخطأ عند الدقيقة 19.

وفي الشوط الثاني تراجع أداء الأهلي وسيطر صن داونز على المباراة وفي الدقائق العشر الأخيرة مرر ثابانغ ماتولودي كرة عرضية عالية ليحولها نونو سانتوس للمرمى كهدف ثانٍ لصن داونز، لينتهي اللقاء بخسارة الأهلي بهدفين لهدف.
