In the silence of the forests and beneath the layers of deep rocks, the secrets of a thousand years lay dormant, waiting for a pure coincidence to come to light. Thus, an ordinary search journey by a hobbyist using a metal detector near the town of "Siismaa" in southern Finland transformed into one of the most significant archaeological discoveries in the modern history of the country, shattering records that had stood for over a century.
The story began earlier this month when the device picked up consecutive signals that prompted Kalle Lappinen to dig, only to be surprised by the presence of a massive treasure of silver. The official response was swift, as archaeologists from the "Lahti" museums hurried the next day to begin excavation operations, revealing the major surprise of finding thousands of silver coins, pieces of raw silver, a bracelet, and a bead, with a total weight of about 4.5 kilograms. Scientists believe that their date dates back to the period between 1000 and 1050 AD.
It was not just the size of the treasure that amazed researchers, but also the rare method of its concealment, as the silver was placed in two separate locations about 12 meters apart, stored inside two containers made of birch bark at a depth of 45 centimeters between the rocks, in what experts described as a "double treasure," rare for the region. The initial examination of the coins reveals a stunning diversity that reflects the vastness of ancient trade networks, as they came from Sweden, Britain, and Germany, along with historical dirhams from the Middle East.
With this discovery, the previous record for the largest collection of coins in Finland, which had been recorded since 1895 with about 1,700 coins, was doubled, as the Siismaa treasure contains more than 4,000 coins. Despite this achievement, a lingering question remains unanswered: who buried this wealth and why? There are speculations that it belonged to a merchant or a wealthy local who hid it out of fear of conflicts, while studies continue to decode history and rewrite the region's role as a vital trade center during the late Iron Age.
