تسببت أمطار غزيرة وعواصف عنيفة في موجة جديدة من الفيضانات والانهيارات الأرضية عبر مناطق واسعة من الهند ونيبال، ما أسفر عن مقتل 19 شخصاً على الأقل وفقدان عشرة عمال، في وقت تواصل فيه الأنهار ارتفاعها إلى مستويات تتجاوز حدود الخطر.

وفي ولاية أوتار براديش الهندية، أعلنت السلطات أن 15 شخصاً لقوا حتفهم خلال الـ48 ساعة الماضية، فيما تعرضت عشرات المنازل لأضرار بالغة، مع تسجيل معدلات أمطار فاقت المعدل الطبيعي بنحو 19 ضعفاً خلال يوم واحد.

وفي نيبال، أدت الانهيارات الأرضية إلى وفاة أربعة أشخاص؛ بينهم ثلاثة أطفال وامرأة، بعد أن طمر انهيار ليلي منزلهم في قرية نيشي خولا بمنطقة باجلونج. كما فُقد عشرة عمال نيباليين عقب انهيار جليدي ضرب معسكر القاعدة في جبل هيملونج هيمال، بينما كانوا يجهزون الموقع لاستقبال متسلّقين أجانب لم يكونوا موجودين لحظة وقوع الحادث.

وتحذر السلطات النيبالية من مخاطر متصاعدة، إذ تواجه 49 منطقة من أصل 77 احتمال حدوث فيضانات مفاجئة، مع استمرار ارتفاع منسوب المياه في الأنهار الرئيسية وروافدها. كما تسببت الفيضانات في أضرار بالبنية التحتية، شملت خطوط نقل الطاقة ومرافق الاتصالات، وسط جهود حكومية مكثفة لتقييم الأضرار وإعادة تشغيل المشاريع الحيوية.

وتأتي هذه التطورات بينما لا تزال نيبال تتعافى من كارثة أغسطس الماضية، التي خلّفت أكثر من 1450 قتيلًا وآلاف المفقودين؛ ما يجعل أي موجة جديدة من الأمطار تهديدًا مضاعفًا للمناطق الجبلية الهشة. ومع استمرار سوء الأحوال الجوية، تبقى حالة التأهب مرتفعة في البلدين، وسط مخاوف من توسع نطاق الأضرار خلال الأيام المقبلة.

Heavy rains and violent storms have caused a new wave of floods and landslides across vast areas of India and Nepal, resulting in the deaths of at least 19 people and the disappearance of ten workers, as rivers continue to rise to levels beyond danger.

In the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, authorities reported that 15 people have died in the past 48 hours, while dozens of homes have suffered severe damage, with rainfall rates exceeding the normal average by about 19 times in a single day.

In Nepal, landslides led to the deaths of four people, including three children and a woman, after a nighttime landslide buried their home in the Nishikhola village of the Baglung district. Additionally, ten Nepali workers went missing following an avalanche that struck the base camp on Mount Himlung Himal while they were preparing the site for foreign climbers who were not present at the time of the incident.

Nepalese authorities are warning of rising risks, as 49 out of 77 areas face the potential for flash floods, with water levels in the main rivers and their tributaries continuing to rise. The floods have also caused damage to infrastructure, including power transmission lines and communication facilities, amid intensive government efforts to assess the damage and restart vital projects.

These developments come as Nepal is still recovering from last August's disaster, which left over 1,450 dead and thousands missing; making any new wave of rain a compounded threat to the fragile mountainous areas. With adverse weather conditions persisting, the state of alert remains high in both countries, amid fears of an expansion of the damage in the coming days.
