Today, the planet Mercury witnesses a remarkable astronomical event as it reaches its farthest point in its orbit around the sun, in a phenomenon known as (solar aphelion), where the planet is about 69.8 million kilometers away from the center of the solar system.
This change is part of the nature of Mercury's elliptical orbit, which causes the distance between it and the sun to fluctuate significantly during its orbital cycle.
The head of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, Engineer Majid Abu Zahra, explained that despite its great distance, Mercury does not become more visible in the sky of Earth, as the possibility of observing it depends on its position relative to the sun and Earth, not just on distance alone. He added that the planet approaches the solar perihelion to about 46 million kilometers only, which causes its orbital speed to change according to Kepler's second law; it slows down as it moves away and speeds up as it gets closer.
Mercury completes its orbit around the sun in just 88 Earth days, making it the shortest year among the planets in the solar system, which also makes it the fastest in rotation. Additionally, the changes in its speed and distance reflect on the timings of its appearance and disappearance on the horizon, as it usually appears for short periods just before sunrise or after sunset, due to its close proximity to the sun.
The solar aphelion phenomenon is an opportunity for astronomers to study the dynamics of Mercury's movement and understand how the shape of its orbit affects its behavior, especially since it is one of the most sensitive planets to changes in solar gravity due to its proximity to it.
