خرج حارس مرمى منتخب أيرلندا غافين بازونو عن صمته بشأن قراره الانسحاب من قائمة المنتخب قبل مواجهتي إسرائيل في دوري الأمم الأوروبية، مؤكدًا أن موقفه نابع من قناعاته الشخصية ورفضه لما وصفه بـ«الفظائع التي تشهدها المنطقة».

وقال بازونو، في بيان نشره عبر حسابه على (إنستغرام)، إن تمثيل أيرلندا «يعني له كل شيء»، مؤكدًا احترامه لزملائه والجهاز الفني والشعب الأيرلندي، لكنه أوضح أن قرار عدم المشاركة في المباراتين لم يكن سهلًا عليه. وأضاف: «أنا رجل ذو إيمان قوي وأسعى جاهدًا لأكون شخصًا يتمتع بالأخلاق والمبادئ، لذلك أشعر بأنه سيكون من الخطأ المشاركة في المباريات المقبلة ضد إسرائيل».

وشدد حارس المرمى الأيرلندي على أن موقفه لا يستهدف الشعب الإسرائيلي أو الجالية اليهودية، موضحًا: «ينبع قراري بالكامل من قناعتي الشخصية بأن قتل الأبرياء أمر خاطئ»، ومؤكدًا أن موقفه موجه -بحسب تعبيره- ضد «الفظائع التي تشهدها المنطقة».

وتابع بازونو: «نادرًا ما تتاح للمرء فرصة في الحياة للدفاع عن قضية أسمى وأكبر، وأنا أؤمن بشدة بأن هذه واحدة من تلك الفرص»، في إشارة إلى الأسباب التي دفعته إلى الانسحاب من المواجهتين.

وجاء قرار بازونو بعد اجتماع عقده المنتخب الأيرلندي لمناقشة موقفه من المباراتين، وسط جدل واسع داخل المعسكر بشأن المشاركة في المواجهة المقررة أمام إسرائيل في مدينة ديبرتسن المجرية، قبل أن تعلن إدارة المنتخب أن الأغلبية اختارت خوض المباراة.

وبحسب الاتحاد الأيرلندي لكرة القدم، أجرى اللاعبون مناقشات استمرت نحو أربع ساعات، انتهت بتصويت «بأغلبية كبيرة» لصالح تنفيذ مباراتي دوري الأمم أمام إسرائيل، بينما كان بازونو اللاعب الوحيد الذي انسحب من قائمة المنتخب على خلفية موقفه.

وأكد الاتحاد الأيرلندي رسميًا أن مواجهتي دوري الأمم الأوروبية لموسم 2026-2027 أمام إسرائيل ستقامان، موضحًا أن القرار جاء بعد التشاور مع اللاعبين الذين كانت لديهم مواقف مختلفة بشأن المشاركة.

ومن المقرر أن تقام المواجهة الأولى في ديبرتسن بالمجر، فيما تستضيف مدينة باتشكا توبولا في صربيا المباراة الثانية في 4 أكتوبر، وذلك ضمن ترتيبات اتخذت في ظل المخاوف الأمنية والاحتجاجات المرتبطة بالمباراتين.

وتعود خلفية الجدل إلى موقف الاتحاد الأيرلندي من مشاركة إسرائيل في المسابقات الأوروبية، إذ سبق أن طلب الاتحاد من (يويفا) اتخاذ إجراءات بشأن مشاركة المنتخب الإسرائيلي، كما طلب فصل أيرلندا وإسرائيل في قرعة المسابقات المقبلة، لكن الاتحاد الأوروبي رفض الطلب الأخير، مشيرًا إلى عدم وجود «صراع مباشر» بين البلدين.

Ireland's goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has broken his silence regarding his decision to withdraw from the national team’s roster ahead of the matches against Israel in the UEFA Nations League, confirming that his stance is rooted in his personal convictions and his rejection of what he described as "the atrocities occurring in the region."

In a statement posted on his (Instagram) account, Bazunu said that representing Ireland "means everything" to him, emphasizing his respect for his teammates, the coaching staff, and the Irish people. However, he clarified that the decision not to participate in the matches was not an easy one for him. He added, "I am a man of strong faith and I strive to be someone who upholds morals and principles, so I feel it would be wrong to participate in the upcoming matches against Israel."

The Irish goalkeeper stressed that his stance is not aimed at the Israeli people or the Jewish community, explaining, "My decision is entirely based on my personal conviction that killing innocents is wrong," and affirming that his position is directed - as he put it - against "the atrocities occurring in the region."

Bazunu continued: "Opportunities to defend a higher and greater cause are rare in life, and I strongly believe that this is one of those opportunities," referring to the reasons that led him to withdraw from the two matches.

His decision came after a meeting held by the Irish team to discuss his position regarding the matches, amid widespread debate within the camp about participating in the scheduled encounter against Israel in Debrecen, Hungary, before the team management announced that the majority chose to proceed with the match.

According to the Football Association of Ireland, the players held discussions lasting about four hours, which concluded with a "large majority" voting in favor of proceeding with the two Nations League matches against Israel, while Bazunu was the only player to withdraw from the national team roster based on his stance.

The Football Association of Ireland officially confirmed that the UEFA Nations League matches for the 2026-2027 season against Israel will take place, clarifying that the decision came after consulting with players who had differing views on participation.

The first match is scheduled to take place in Debrecen, Hungary, while the second match will be hosted in Bačka Topola, Serbia, on October 4, as part of arrangements made amid security concerns and protests related to the matches.

The background of the controversy stems from the Football Association of Ireland's position on Israel's participation in European competitions, as the association had previously requested that (UEFA) take action regarding the Israeli national team's participation, and also requested the separation of Ireland and Israel in the draw for upcoming competitions. However, the European governing body rejected the latter request, citing the absence of a "direct conflict" between the two countries.
