After more than half a century away from the public eye, a rare masterpiece by Vincent van Gogh is returning to the forefront, but this time through an auction that could turn it into one of the most expensive paintings sold in the world. The painting "Flowering Chestnut Tree" was displayed in London, the British capital, on Wednesday, in preparation for its sale as part of an exceptional art collection expected to exceed a total value of $450 million.

The painting is titled "Châtaigniers en fleurs," and it was painted by Van Gogh in May 1890, during his stay in the village of Auvers-sur-Oise in France, after leaving the psychiatric hospital in Saint-Rémy, and just a few weeks before his death in July of the same year.

The painting is estimated to be worth around $180 million, making it the most prominent piece in the collection being offered for sale. It is also one of only eight paintings created by the artist during that period that still exist in private collections, according to The Guardian.

After Van Gogh's death, ownership of the work passed to his brother Theo, before later reaching the private collection of the late Argentine collector Nelly Arietta de Blaker, who passed away in 2020. The painting, along with the rest of the collection, remained out of circulation and public display for more than five decades.

The significance of the auction does not stop with the Van Gogh painting, as the collection includes 12 artworks by prominent artists from the Impressionist and Modern art movements, including Paul Cézanne, whose famous painting Harlequin is estimated to be valued at $150 million.

The collection also features works by Claude Monet, Paul Gauguin, Edgar Degas, and André Derain, in a lineup that has led art experts at Sotheby’s to describe it as akin to a "mini Musée d'Orsay."

The total value of the works on display is expected to exceed $450 million, in an auction viewed as a rare event in the global art market, especially since the collection has remained out of circulation and public display for decades.

The journey of the paintings begins in London, where they will be exhibited for two days, before moving to Taipei, Hong Kong, and Paris as part of an international tour that allows art enthusiasts and interested parties to view them up close.

The decisive moment will be in New York on November 18, when Sotheby’s will present the works in a public auction, determining through competition in the hall whether Van Gogh's masterpiece will approach the estimated $180 million or exceed it.
