Astronomers have detected a potential body in the habitable zone around a very hot star of spectral type A, marking a first of its kind for this type of star, although the validity of the discovery remains uncertain. The candidate planet is named "HD 156295 b," and it orbits a star located about 140 light-years from Earth, which can be seen with the naked eye. Researchers estimated the likelihood of the discovery being accurate at around 50%.

Estimates suggest that the mass of the potential planet is about six times that of Jupiter, and it is separated from its star by approximately 4 astronomical units, completing a full orbit around it in about 2,200 days, or roughly 6 Earth years, according to a report by "Science Alert" on a study published in the "Astrophysical Journal." The star "HD 156295" belongs to spectral type A, which are white stars leaning towards blue and are hotter than the Sun. Its brightness exceeds that of the Sun by about nine times, with a temperature nearing 7,500 degrees Celsius.

It also belongs to the variable stars of the "Delta Scuti" type, which regularly change their brightness, a characteristic that helped scientists detect potential indicators of the planet's existence. The candidate planet receives about 60% of the amount of radiation that Earth receives from the Sun, and the system is only about 700 million years old, indicating that it is still in an early stage of development.

The researchers relied on a technique known as "pulse timing," which tracks minute changes in the time it takes for the star's light to reach Earth. Due to the regularity of the star's pulses, slight deviations in their timing can be observed, which may result from the gravitational pull of an orbiting body. The team scanned data from about 16,500 "Delta Scuti" stars observed by NASA's "TESS" satellite before narrowing the results down to just 9 systems.

One of these systems contains the candidate planet, while the other eight systems are likely to host brown dwarfs, which are heavier than planets but do not have enough mass to ignite hydrogen fusion like stars. The researchers confirmed that the timing variations they observed are at the limits of TESS's current data detection capabilities, necessitating caution in interpreting the results and continued monitoring to confirm the planet's existence.

The team believes that the results, even if it turns out that some signals are not due to planets, will aid in improving future search efforts and understanding the prevalence of giant planets with intermediate orbits around massive stars. The "PLATO" observatory of the European Space Agency is expected to provide higher precision in observing such systems during its mission to monitor over 200,000 stars.

Despite the potential planet being located in the habitable zone, its large mass suggests that it is a gas giant, which limits the chances of life existing on it. However, its potential presence around a very hot star remains a subject of scientific interest. The number of exoplanets discovered so far has exceeded 6,300, observed using various astronomical techniques and methods.
