تستعد ولاية تينيسي لتنفيذ حكم الإعدام بحق السجينة كريستا بايك، لتصبح أول امرأة تُعدم في الولاية منذ عام 1820، وذلك بعد رفض طلب العفو المقدم لصالحها واستمرار قرار السلطات بتنفيذ العقوبة.

وتعود القضية إلى عام 1995، حين أُدينت بايك، وكانت في الثامنة عشرة، بقتل زميلتها كولين سليمر البالغة 19 عامًا في مدينة نوكسفيل، بمشاركة صديقها الذي كان في السابعة عشرة. وحظيت الجريمة باهتمام واسع بسبب بشاعتها وصغر سن المتورطين، إضافة إلى نقش رمزٍ شيطاني على جسد الضحية، ما جعل بايك أصغر امرأة يصدر بحقها حكم بالإعدام في التاريخ الأمريكي الحديث.

ورغم رفض حاكم الولاية بيل لي التدخل، واصل فريق الدفاع ومنظمات حقوقية؛ بينها العفو الدولية والاتحاد الأمريكي للحريات المدنية، محاولاتهم لوقف تنفيذ الحكم عبر طلبات للمحكمة العليا. وأشار المدافعون إلى الظروف القاسية التي عاشتها بايك في طفولتها، من اعتداءاتٍ جنسية واضطراباتٍ نفسية وصدماتٍ متراكمة، مؤكدين أنها أبدت ندمًا عميقًا وتلقت علاجًا طويلًا خلال سنوات سجنها.

في المقابل، تحدثت والدة الضحية عن شخصية ابنتها واهتماماتها، مؤكدة أن طيبة قلبها وثقتها بالآخرين كانتا من الأسباب التي قادتها إلى نهايتها المأساوية.وتُعد بايك أول امرأة تُنفذ بحقها عقوبة الإعدام في تينيسي منذ عام 1820، في وقت شهدت فيه الولايات المتحدة حالات محدودة لإعدام نساء، أبرزها إعدام ليزا مونتغمري عام 2021.

Tennessee is preparing to carry out the death sentence against inmate Krista Pike, making her the first woman to be executed in the state since 1820, following the rejection of a clemency request made on her behalf and the authorities' decision to proceed with the punishment.

The case dates back to 1995, when Pike, then eighteen, was convicted of murdering her classmate, 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, in Knoxville, with the involvement of her boyfriend, who was seventeen at the time. The crime garnered widespread attention due to its brutality and the young age of those involved, in addition to the carving of a satanic symbol on the victim's body, making Pike the youngest woman to receive a death sentence in modern American history.

Despite Governor Bill Lee's refusal to intervene, the defense team and human rights organizations, including Amnesty International and the American Civil Liberties Union, continued their efforts to halt the execution through petitions to the Supreme Court. Advocates pointed to the harsh circumstances Pike faced in her childhood, including sexual abuse, mental health issues, and accumulated trauma, emphasizing that she has shown deep remorse and received long-term treatment during her years in prison.

In contrast, the victim's mother spoke about her daughter's character and interests, asserting that her kind heart and trust in others were among the reasons that led to her tragic end. Pike is set to be the first woman executed in Tennessee since 1820, at a time when the United States has seen limited instances of women being executed, the most notable being the execution of Lisa Montgomery in 2021.
