The scam began with a warning message that appeared on a computer screen and ended with an elderly American woman losing gold bullion worth over $318,000 after being convinced by fraudsters that her financial accounts had been hacked and that she needed to convert her money into gold for protection.

The story started last April when a message appeared on the device of a 78-year-old woman in Illinois, USA, stating that her computer had been hacked. She searched online for Microsoft support and called the first number that appeared to her.

Fake Employee

A person responded, claiming to be a member of Microsoft’s fraud prevention team, and informed her that her personal and financial data was at risk, before asking for permission to access her device remotely to investigate the issue.

After gaining access to the computer, the fraudsters identified information related to her investment accounts before transferring the call to another person who claimed to work in the fraud prevention department of an investment firm that the victim dealt with.

$1.8 Million

The fraudsters convinced her that protecting her money required transferring about $1.8 million from her investment accounts to other accounts, and then purchasing gold bullion to be handed over to someone they said was a government official who would keep it safe until her funds were secured.

According to court records, the woman ultimately purchased gold worth over $823,000, with the first payment she handed over to the fraudsters amounting to $318,459.

On June 8, after 67 days of communication with the fraudsters, the woman went to the parking lot of a store in Marion, carrying 6 one-ounce bars and 20 bars weighing 100 grams each.

The agreement was that she would not hand over the gold until the person receiving it said a specific password, and after exchanging the agreed-upon word, she handed over the box, after which the gold disappeared.

Suspicion Reveals the Trick

However, the fraudsters did not stop, as they asked her to prepare another quantity of gold. At this point, the woman began to suspect something was wrong after noticing that the seal on the documents sent to her did not resemble the official seal of the U.S. government, prompting her to contact the police.

In cooperation with her, the police arranged a new delivery operation, this time for gold bars valued at approximately $272,000, and the fraudsters set a new password: “Queen of Poker.”

Sting for the Receiver

When a man arrived to collect the box at the scheduled time, the police were monitoring the area, leading to the arrest of Ruyo Lian, 30 years old, who later pleaded guilty in federal court.

Investigations revealed that the gang relied on fear and trust to convince the victim that they were dealing with official entities, even asking her to send daily “good morning” and “good evening” messages, and providing her with a dedicated phone to maintain communication with her.
