Names have made their presence felt away from leading roles and the forefront of "credits" and the cheers of the audience, yet they have remained an essential part of the memory of the Saudi viewer, and key figures in the most important artistic works over the decades.

Mohammed Al-Kanhal, Bashir Al-Ghanim, Ali Al-Mudhaf, Jaafar Al-Ghareeb, Habib Al-Habib, Khalid Sami, Youssef Al-Jarrah, Ali Ibrahim, Abdullah Al-Muzaini, and others.

These are examples of actors who possessed the ability to give supporting characters a weight that exceeds their space, contributing to building the dramatic scene and supporting its heroes, to the point that their roles in many works became elements that provide the story with balance and credibility.

However, they lost leading roles and did not have the opportunity for absolute stardom until the end of their artistic journey!

Is it an injustice to art or a price paid by stars?

"Stars of the shadow" is a term that is not related to the size of talent or the value of experience, as much as it refers to the nature of the roles they operate within. The supporting actor may not lead the story, but they provide the main character with the space needed to shine, creating a believable world around the main character.

Mohammed Al-Kanhal, for example, is a model of an actor who builds his presence from details; he does not need a long display to leave an impact. Youssef Al-Jarrah relies on the rhythm of the character, the varied way of speaking, and the lively reactions, which made his presence part of the fabric of the scene rather than just an addition to it.

As for Ali Ibrahim, his presence is linked to a clear ability to handle characters with different moods and compositions.

In supporting roles specifically, the late actor Fahd Al-Hayan's importance emerged through creating characters with their own independence, but without turning them into a contrived competitor to the hero or a burden on the story's path.

Bashir Al-Ghanim has another uniqueness; his presence is based on a spontaneity that makes him close to the local character and its daily details. That simplicity, which seems easy on screen, actually requires an understanding of the rhythm of the scene and the limits of the character, especially when the goal is to create an impact within a limited timeframe.

Ali Al-Mudhaf represents one of the faces associated with the memory of Saudi drama over many years. His presence is built on experience that knows when to advance within the scene and when to leave space for others, which is one of the most important characteristics of a professional supporting actor.

Stardom is not created in isolation

The importance of these actors lies in the fact that the hero does not work in a vacuum; the main character needs a father, a brother, a friend, an adversary, a neighbor, and a colleague, and before that, they need actors capable of transforming these written relationships into real life on screen.

A work may have a popular hero, a good script, and a large production, but the scene loses much of its value when the characters surrounding the hero are weak or flat.

Stars belong to a school that has created an important part of the presence of Saudi drama through character, not just through the concept of stardom alone. Characters that enter the story, perform their function, and leave an impact, and sometimes remain in the audience's memory years after the work has ended.

With the significant transformations taking place in the Saudi industry and the expansion of production size, the need to restore recognition for this type of actor seems greater. The creation of strong drama does not require an increase in the number of "heroes" as much as it needs to build a complete cast, where each actor can make the character they portray essential to the story.

Deserved, not a late reward

Critic Ali Faqindash believes that classifying some stars of Saudi drama under the term "shadow stars" does not reflect the true value of their experiences, as the shadow here relates to their position within the structure of the work, not to the level of their presence or talent. They belong to what is critically known as "character actors" or "stars of secondary roles," and they are actors who possess the ability to build an independent character within a limited space, transforming a transient role into a lasting presence in the viewer's memory.

He says: "The supporting actor does not necessarily stand behind the hero; they may be one of the most important elements that give meaning to the stardom. The secondary character may reveal dimensions of the main character, test their choices, or give them a human dimension. The strength of the scene does not stem from a single actor, but from the interaction between characters capable of producing real meaning."

Regarding granting them absolute stardom, Faqindash believes that the issue should not be presented as a late reward, but rather as an artistic entitlement conditioned by a suitable script, a complex character, and a director capable of investing in the experience, as stardom does not succeed solely based on the actor's fame; it requires dramatic material that reveals their ability to carry the story and present multiple levels of performance.
