Croatia's national team captain Luka Modrić expressed his disappointment over the catastrophic defeat his team suffered against England, losing 7-0 yesterday (Saturday), in the third round of the UEFA Nations League.
The Heaviest Defeat in Croatia's History
The defeat against England 7-0 is the heaviest loss in the history of the Croatian national team, which was looking forward to a perfect start under the leadership of coach Slaven Bilić, who returned to lead Croatia for a second term after Zlatko Dalić's departure following the 2026 World Cup.
Modrić Feels Ashamed
Modrić said in press statements following the catastrophic loss: "I have been here for 20 years, but this is the first time I feel ashamed after a match. We can lose, and the opponent can be better, but to lose in this way and waste the reputation we have built over the years is unacceptable; I feel ashamed."
A "Catastrophic Night"
The AC Milan player added: "From the first minute to the last, we did not play football; it felt like we were playing with four or five players less than the England team. It was a catastrophic night."
Good Start Then Collapse
The Croatian national team started its campaign in the current edition of the UEFA Nations League with a victory over the Czech Republic 2-1, then suffered two heavy defeats against Spain 4-1 and England 7-0.
New Clash Against Spain
The Croatian national team faces a new tough test against Spain next Tuesday, in the fourth round of the UEFA Nations League.
