Kenya has recorded its first confirmed case and first death from Ebola in its history, following the death of a Kenyan citizen in the capital Nairobi after contracting the "Bundibugyo" virus, one of the strains that cause Ebola. Meanwhile, health authorities have intensified their measures to contain any potential transmission of the infection and have begun tracking dozens of contacts, including family members, healthcare workers, and passengers and crew from the flight that brought him to the country.
The World Health Organization confirmed that the case originated from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which is experiencing a widespread outbreak of the virus, noting that it is working with the Kenyan government to enhance epidemiological surveillance, investigate the case, monitor contacts, and tighten screening at high-risk entry points.
Tracking 28 Contacts and 27 People on the Flight
Health authorities announced that 28 contacts have been identified so far, including family members of the deceased and healthcare workers who participated in his care. Authorities are also working to track 23 passengers and four crew members from the flight he took from Uganda to Nairobi, making arrangements to follow up with individuals assessed to be at risk and placing them in appropriate quarantine.
The Kenyan Ministry of Health reported that the contacts will be monitored for 21 days as part of efforts to detect any potential infections early and prevent the transmission of the virus.
