The Gulf Health Council has warned about the dangers of using electronic cigarettes.

It pointed out that young people who use them are about three times more likely to smoke traditional cigarettes later on, according to the World Health Organization, which estimated in a report released in 2024 that the number of tobacco users globally in the age group of 13–15 years is approximately 37 million.

The council continues its awareness campaign (today before tomorrow) by issuing an awareness guide aimed at empowering youth in the Gulf countries to refuse the first experience with non-traditional smoking products, and enhancing their ability to face social pressures and make conscious health decisions.

The guide clarifies that these products are not safe, highlighting the impact of nicotine on brain growth, attention, learning, mood, and impulse control until the age of 25, as well as the association of electronic cigarette use with symptoms of anxiety and depression, and the risks of exposure to toxic and carcinogenic substances.

It also reviews the effects of smoking on cardiovascular health, the respiratory system, bones, and oral and dental health, as well as its relationship with sleep quality and academic performance, along with the risks of dual use of traditional and electronic cigarettes and misleading marketing.

The council emphasizes the importance of the role of families and educational and community institutions in prevention, through early dialogue with youth, providing age-appropriate information, enhancing emotional management and problem-solving skills, and helping them cope with peer pressure and psychological and social stress.
